Apple Watch Series 2 Randomly Turns Off

Hi,

A week ago, I got an Apple Watch Series 2, 42mm.

This is my first Apple Watch and I've been using it everyday without major problems, but sometimes the watch will just turn off by itself. This has happened twice and both times it happened a few minutes after logging a 45 minutes workout.

I'm aware that the watch will turn off if the battery is low, but both times the battery was charged to around 85% (I charge the watch overnight and workout in the morning). The watch turns on normally if I press the side button.

The watch software is up to date (watchOS 3.1) as well as my iPhone's (iOS 10.1, iPhone 6 64GB). I'm not sure if this is relevant, but my watch is the Japanese model with Felica.

Is anyone having the same problem? Any tips on how to fix this issue would be really appreciated!

Thanks.

Hi

It is not normal for your Apple Watch to turn off unexpectedly.

Whilst I can't say why it is doing so, the following steps may help to prevent the issue from recurring:

Restart both your iPhone and your Apple Watch, turning both off together, then restarting your iPhone first:

Test by removing apps:

Unpair and re-pair your Apple Watch:

If the issue then still persists, I suggest that you contact Apple Support (mail-in service may be available, if required), make a Genius Bar reservation or visit an Apple Authorised Service Provider with a view to having it checked and, if recommended, serviced:

My Series 2 42mm Gold Sport has done this at least 2 times in last 3-4 weeks. I just happen to notice it did not show anything when raising wrist, then find out it is off. I poewr it up and then it seems fine. As someone mentioned, it would mess up health stats when it is off. I think I caught mine both times fairly quickly. I don't remember my Series 1 version doing this. I have Apple Care, if it gets worse I wilk be going to Apple.

I have the same problem. The device just randomly shuts down, including just after being charged. The first time I noticed it was when I was using the weather complication, which, by the way no longer works on the watch. Whenever I tried to access the weather it would shut down. Now I don't get weather on the watch and it randomly shuts down.

I've had this happen 3 times. After the first 2 times I took it to the Apple Store, they did a diagnostic test and said nothing was wrong. So I had it mailed to their factory and they sent it back saying nothing was wrong. After I received it, I did a restore as a new watch and couple weeks later it happens again. I just called apple support and they told me if nothing shows up on their diagnostic report there's nothing they can do. I asked to speak to a different senior advisor and his solution is to send the engineers my report to see if they come up with anything. Basically if it doesn't show up as a problem on the diagnostics, I just spent 400 on a faulty watch that apple will do nothing about and I've only had the watch for a couple of months. If you don't spend more money on apple care, they will not do much to fix your problem if it doesn't show up on the diagnostics. If they don't fix this problem for me, I'm done with apple products for good. I'll update you on what they do.

I too have the same problem. Luckily I bought 3rd party insurance but they are probably going to just send me a refurbished watch. Does apple have any plan to fix this or are they just happy to get the money? Seems to be pretty systemic for such a hip consumer friendly company. Maybe we just come out with the Apple Watch 3 and ignor all the people with previous Series 2 problems.

Hello,

Am having similar issues to most people random shutdowns of my watch, plus it won't restart until it gets a power supply.

Have had my watch now for only a month and I'm not very happy. Have been on the phone to Apple this morning and eventually was put through to a senior advisor who said Apple are aware of this issue it is apparently a software problem not hardware.

He said that Apple engineers have asked them to collect as much information off customers about theses ramdome shutdowns and hopefully Apple will issue a software update to rectify the issue shortly.

Hello,

i have had had my Apple Watch for a week and it already happened to me twice. I find this very annoying and also un-Apple like to have a product that unreliable.

I hope there here will be a solution soon as I don't wamt to have to spend my time at an Apple Store or fighting to get a replacemen.

Nike+ 42mm Series 2.

I've seen my watch spontaneously restart while I'm using an app. I've seen the watch restart by itself on the charger. Unpair/re-pair, setup as new watch, remove all apps, etc., all did nothing, it still spontaneously restarts.

My watch was finally replaced by AppleCare, the issue persists. My iPhone 7+ was replaced, it restarted only once on me while I was using an app--progress, I suppose.

According to AppleCare, or so I was told by their rep, an app can indeed cause the watch to restart; however, it's just a question of which app, and under what circumstances. They gathered logs and sent them to their engineers with a bunch of things to try but no solution yet. Replacing the phone was the last hardware attempt, and it did make enough of a difference but time will tell if that's the final solution to this problem.

Update. Forget what I said earlier. Either there's no correlation between the restarts and bad Wi-Fi, or it's one of the contributing factors. Last night, I casually looked at my watch to check the time, and it restarted not 1/2 a sec after the watchface showed. Two watches later, still crashes religiously every day.

I'm currently waiting on Apple to call me back, let me know what to do with this thing. In the meantime, this thing is going in a drawer, and I'm going back to my old wristwatch. I hate to say it but I've come to the realization this thing is junk.

I've had my series 2 watch about a month and an hour ago I noticed it shut right off. This is the second time. The first time I had it for a couple days. Scared the begeebies out of me considering how expensive this is. I can see no reason for it. Iboth times I have been at work. I'm careful not to bang it into anything. I'm wondering if like a computer it just needs to reboot now and then.

Hi

If your watch face includes the Battery complication, it is possible that accidental screen interactions are causing your issue.

Tapping on the Battery complication shows the battery charge level along with a large button for placing the watch into Power Reserve mode.

You may wish to consider using your watch for a while without that complication on the watch face, to see whether the issue recurs:

I've had this happen a couple of times with my Series 2 as well (in the two months or so that I've had it now).

I use the same watch face you do. No battery complication. The second time it happened was this morning (first time was weeks ago). One minute it was fine, the next thing I know it was off. It was at over 95% power when this happened, and I highly doubt it was in power reserve mode.
