iTunes Crashes When Adding Songs, After Latest Update

As the title states, my iTunes crashes every time I try to add a song to my library. This only started happening right after I updated my iTunes to version 12.5.2. I tried uninstalling and reinstalling iTunes but that did not help.

Here's exactly what happens:

1. I add 1 song to the iTunes library

2. The cloud symbol appears and is being added to the cloud. (I would like to add that I am subscribed for iTunes Match)

3. iTunes crashes

4. I reopen iTunes and there is not 1 but 2 versions of the same song in my library

At the end I am not able to add any new music to my library.

Please assist

Thank you

Windows 10

I'm having this same problem. I've tried deleting the .dll and repairing the install, issue persists.

I've tried completely uninstalling and re-installing iTunes (and anything Apple related), issue persists. If there aren't any songs to match, iTunes works just fine. As soon as I add a single song, and iTunes tries to match it, the application crashes.

I don't see what else i can give you - i attached Event ID 1000 in my previous post, for reference - the 'Fault offset' value stays the same.

Here's data from WER that includes list of loaded modules, i don't however believe it will be of any use:

What informations are you expecting? My original post already shows more than enough in my opinion, instruction on offset 0x0000000000fc0938 (x64 addressing scheme) from iTunesCore.dll caused exception 0xc0000005 (ACCESS_VIOLATION) - note however that this information will be useful only for developers that can access iTunes source code and debugging symbols.

For reference, problem occurs on Windows 10 Pro, 1607 OS Build 14393.351 (latest cumulative updates from 27.10 applied)

Confirmation that the correct version of iTunesCore.dll was loading was one thing, but it was more in hope of inspiration than anything specific. The full details could usefully be included with any feedback you submit on this error. Have you tried launching iTunes as the administrator? Aha, I've just recalled a similar instance that was resolved by first disabling the firewall and then tweaking the settings of it so iTunes would then run without error. Do you have a firewall in place?

Have you tried launching iTunes as the administrator?

I refuse to run iTunes with escalated privileges tokens and i see no point in doing so since restoring old version of iTunes fixes the issue with no other changes to environment, so it is definitely a problem with code in new version. Additionally i can verify that iTunes has permissions to access library. Can you provide any reason why it would require escalation tokens from Windows? Even if it does, it is still a bug.

Aha, I've just recalled a similar instance that was resolved by first disabling the firewall and then tweaking the settings of it so iTunes would then run without error. Do you have a firewall in place?

Yes i'm using Windows Firewall (with Advanced Security since i'm running Pro version of Windows) however again - old version of iTunes was working fine and is still working fine after restoring it so i see no reason why it would be an issue - i can additionally confirm that rule pointing to 'C:\Program Files\iTunes\iTunes.exe' exists in Inbound store allowing iTunes for any inbound connections on all network security profiles and was configured upon installation of iTunes, it has however nothing to do with iCloud Music Library as it is using HTTP connections to Apple servers to upload files and would fall under Outbound store which is configured per default to allow any connection.

As additional information i can say that crash is happening in-between iCloud Music Library upload session, after initial metadata of albums and playlist (such as names) was uploaded and before actual files are being transferred to Apple servers - do note that this causes in 1 of 3 times a situation where upon opening iTunes again, duplicated albums or playlists are visible.

Additionally, changing metadata such as creating or removing playlist, removing songs, changing album or song info works fine - the issue shows up only when iTunes tries to upload new track.

I'm a fellow user. I have no deeper insight as to the inner workings of iTunes. I'm only passing on ideas that I've come across that might help you. Up to you whether or not you're willing to try them. If you're connecting to the Internet via a router then my understanding is that you don't really need an active firewall on the computer, so if there is a chance it may be causing the problem then temporarily disabling it to see if it helps might be worth a shot. Running iTunes as the administrator one time has been known to help some users, sometimes. Holding down ctrl+shift when you launch iTunes to run in its own safe mode might also help. Potentially this new version needs to reorganize its configuration files, caches etc. and it might be falling over if blocked. Interference from anti-virus software is another potential cause for this type of crash.

See Troubleshooting issues with iTunes for Windows updates further advice, including tips on rolling back to the previous build.

Don't want this to be dismissed so i tried running iTunes as Administrator with disabled firewall - still crashing. Running iTunes in safe mode is pointless since it disables iCloud Music Library sync entirely so i can't test it. Disabling antivirus has no effect either.

I was however able to confirm that crash happens only when iTunes tries to upload song that it failed to match - if iTunes manages to match song, no upload occurs and no crash.

Oct 29, 2016 6:37 PM in response to eider96

That looks like you've narrowed things down as to what triggers the crash, and eliminated some of the usual lines of attack. At this point it might be best to use iTunes Feedback or Apple Bug Reporter to let Apple know what you've found so far. The only other ideas that come to mind are testing behaviour with a new library or user profile, though I suspect the results will be the same.
