Safari white box with blue question mark

I got a MacBook with latest Sierra 10.12.1 and all off a sudden all I see is a white box with blue question mark on https://www.theguardian.com/uk site instead of pictures using Safari. Pictures are showing ok on Firefox, under a different login-in on the same Mac and for other news sites whilst using Safari so the issue must be with my Safari settings with the theguardian site.

I've removed all plug-ins and extensions (none were theguardian specific anyway), emptied the cache and disabled extensions in the develop dropdown. Any advise on what to try next?

I'm prepared to do a factory default reset to clear this but even this is not available. Thanks

Hi RoyD1975

Sorry, this wont be any help but I have exactly the same problem, same timeframe and have done exactly the same as you except setting up a new user account. Both The Guardian and BBC work perfectly on my partner's account - same Mac - and they work fine on mine with Firefox. I'm reluctant to set up a new user as a workaround as there must be a reason why this is happening and that is what I want to find out.

Best wishes.

Hello Tinnerbiscuits

Oh, but it does. I feel much better that someone has a similar experience. Im not technical and s pent an hour researching what to do hence all avenues explored to no effect.

I have just tried to access both sites via DuckDuckGo and the problem is still there.

Have wasted too much time on it already ( and emailed The Guardian too). My machine is making a little noise on start up too since Sierra and i thought it might be early signs of a hard drive failure. I like this iMac (esp the disc drawer for uploading cd's into iTunes) so 'phoned a reputable Apple approved service company to see about replacing the HDD with an SSD but apparently that's a bit of an issue, so i'm hoping it is a software issue.

Hopefully someone with the smarts can tell me where I've been the idiot who has

ticked/unchecked/selected/deselected an option which is causing this problem.

Many thanks for replying.

One other thing ... when I try to go to theguardian.com, Safari displays a pop-up "Safari can't verify the identity of the website www.theguardian.com" etc. Doesn't happen with the BBC. This started at the same time as the blue question mark.

My Safari Preferences are the same as my partner's (even down to The Guardian being our home page) which makes the cause more difficult to pin down so I don't think you've changed an option which has caused the problem. I have very limited technical knowledge in this area, but in the true spirit of Change Management, what has changed? In my case, these problems started with Sierra.

Incidentally, did The Guardian reply to your email?

Hello Tinner

Apologies for the informality (given we've only just met), but no, the Guardian haven't yet replied.

I should have mentioned that I get the same certificate warning from the Guardian website too. I spent half an hour or sotrying to deal with that via keychain access I think, again to no avail. Interestingly, I read a rugby website called 'Planet Rugby' and in a thread on that forum on images I started to get the blue box yesterday too.

As you say, all seemingly linked to the timing of Sierra?

Sorry to be of no constructive help.

Hi abjorkie

Not adding anything to the discussion but good to know that other people have the same problem as me.

Since the OS update to 10.12.1 I've had this problem on Guardian and other sites. Changing Adobe Flash Preferences to "on" seemed to solve it - along with clearing cache etc. At least on my MacBook but same settings havent worked on an iMac.

Yesterday the Guardian Comments section disappeared on the MacBook using Safari but not the iMac using Safari (or an iPad).

BBC iPlayer works ok

Please post if you get a fix. I'm not in the mood to reinstall.

Hi Herbie, RoyD and everyone else

This cured mine ...

I followed the info that Eric Root and others wrote. Checked that the certificates were genuine and went to Finder>Applications>Utilities>Terminal. Then type

sqlite3 ~/Library/Keychains/*/ocspcache.sqlite3 'DELETE FROM ocsp;'

and press return.

I then restarted the Mac but I understand you can just reload Safari. It wipes out your Keychain entries so you will have to initiate that again but The Guardian and BBC websites are now behaving as they should. Thanks, Eric.

Steve.

All

Meant to ask why it wouldn't work for me when I tried it at the but forgot and put up with it.

Anyway, tried one more time tonight by copying and pasting the instruction and lo and behold, worked for me too.

A huge thank you to Eric and Tinnerbiscuits et al as this has cleared the issue completely with iplayer now working too and safari seeming faster(?) as well

Help much appreciated, Merry christmas to one and all
