Safari white box with blue question mark

I got a MacBook with latest Sierra 10.12.1 and all off a sudden all I see is a white box with blue question mark on https://www.theguardian.com/uk site instead of pictures using Safari. Pictures are showing ok on Firefox, under a different login-in on the same Mac and for other news sites whilst using Safari so the issue must be with my Safari settings with the theguardian site.

I've removed all plug-ins and extensions (none were theguardian specific anyway), emptied the cache and disabled extensions in the develop dropdown. Any advise on what to try next?

I'm prepared to do a factory default reset to clear this but even this is not available. Thanks

Go step by step and test.

1. Startup in Safe Mode and restart normally using the “Restart” button at the bottom.

https://support.apple.com/kb/PH25617?locale=en_US&viewlocale=en_US

2. Safari > Preference > Advanced

Checkmark the box beside "Show Develop menu in menu bar".

Develop menu will appear in the Safari menu bar.

Click “Develop” to show the dropdown.

Click "Empty Caches" from the dropdown and test.

Make sure that “Disable Images” is not selected.

If you see a checkmark beside “Disable Images”, click on it to remove it and test.

3. Remove Cookies and test.

Safari > Preferences > Privacy > Cookies and other website data:

Click the “Manage Website Data” button.

Remove all cookies except ones from Apple, your internet service provider and banks.

4. Disable Extensions and test.

Safari > Preferences > Extensions

Select and disable all extensions and test.

Enable Extensions one by one and test.

To uninstall any extension, select it and click the “Uninstall” button.

Hi Dominic, thanks for the info. I went through all the steps but the issue still exists.

Additionally I noticed something weird as part of step 3 'Manage Website Data'. When I removed any one or multiple websites they reappeared on the list after refresh. I then drastically removed all and got the confirmation box 'do I really want to do this', clicked yes and all the websites still stayed there.

Also as part of step 4 'Extensions' - I have no left to remove or add back in.

Anything else you can suggest I try. Thank you

You are welcome. That is the newest version I've been able to find.

Fitbit is crashing. Either uninstall it or uninstall/reinstall.

Most people advise not to use cleaning programs. They can destroy your computer operation as they may already have done.

CleanMyMac2 Un-install

After un-installing, use this program to make sure you got all the pieces.

EasyFind – Spotlight Replacement

Get rid of Trusteer. It doesn’t work well under Mac OS.

Just realised that whatever the issue is impacting Safari under my log in is also preventing me using BBC iPlayer. Same as with the guardian news site BBC Iplayer works fine in Firefox and Safari under different log in on the same mac.

Any other tips as to what to try before I have to take it a genius bar? thanks in advance

Oct 30, 2016 6:14 AM in response to abjorkie

You are welcome. Have you tried this?

Go to Finder and select your user/home folder. With that Finder window as the front window, either select Finder/View/Show View options or go command - J. When the View options opens, check ’Show Library Folder’. That should make your user library folder visible in your user/home folder. Select Library/Caches/com.apple.Safari/Cache.db and move it to the trash.

Oct 30, 2016 6:36 AM in response to Eric Root

Yes, tried yesterday and again today. In fact, I deleted all of Cashes, Cookies and Logs to no avail :-(

Is there a way to just reinstall Safari or format only that application to factory settings? I fully appreciate that I will loose a lot if info as part of this process but could for instance move over all my bookmarks etc. firefox for the time being...?

Oct 30, 2016 7:43 AM in response to abjorkie

You have to reinstall the OS to reinstall Safari. To reset Safari, you can use the below steps, some of which you've already tried.

Safari/Preferences/Advanced - enable the Develop menu, then go there and Empty Caches. Quit/reopen Safari and test. Then try Safari/History/Show History and delete all history items. Quit/reopen Safari and test. You can also try try Safari/Clear History…. The down side is it clears all cookies. Doing this may cause some sites to no longer recognize your computer as one that has visited the web site.

Go to Safari Preferences/Extensions and turn all extensions off. Test. If okay, turn the extensions on one by one until you figure out what extension is causing the problem.

Hi All

Have had exactly the same issue re images on the Guardian website, some images on the BBC and inability to play video on the BBC. Arose in the last week or so.

i tried the empty cache/turn off extensions/clear cookies etc all to no avail. Have uninstalled and re-installed flash too and it made no difference.

I set up new user account on the mac and both websites work work perfectly well on that account.

Any help would be really appreciated.
