Default folder for Safari bookmarks

My default used to be "Favorites" but now it shows up at the first favorite IN that list. So each time i have to change it back to Favorites, when I create a new bookmark. It is supposed to remember that change, but never does. How can I fix this? It's irritating.

what i did was file - export bookmarks to html file and saved.... then deleted the bookmarks.plist (~/Library/Safari/),,,, i then shut safari and restarted mac.... i then reloaded safari and then went file - import from html file (the one you saved)... i then renamed it bookmarks,,,,, it then automatically saves bookmarks to the new folder when going to - bookmarks / add bookmark... 🙂 i would advise backing up the bookmarks.plist to your desktop before proceeding with above advice .... +++ i found on one mac i had to go to bookmarks - edit bookmarks select all (except favourites folder) then delete, as it kept reverting to the earlier bookmark layout and problems and then copy html of my bookmarks and rename...

Might be a corrupt .plist.

Do a backup, preferably 2 backups on 2 separate drives.

Quit the application.

Go to Finder and select your user/home folder. With that Finder window as the front window, either select Finder/View/Show View options or go command - J. When the View options opens, check ’Show Library Folder’. That should make your user library folder visible in your user/home folder. Select Library. Then go to Preferences/com.apple.Safari.plist. Move the .plist to your desktop.

Restart the computer, open the application, and test. If it works okay, delete the plist from the desktop.

If the application is the same, return the .plist to where you got it from, overwriting the newer one.

Long shot.

Safari/Preferences/Advanced - enable the Develop menu, then go there and Empty Caches. Quit/reopen Safari and test. Then try Safari/History/Show History and delete all history items. Quit/reopen Safari and test. You can also try try Safari/Reset Safari. The down side is it clears all cookies. Doing this may cause some sites to no longer recognize your computer as one that has visited the web site. In Finder hold down the option/alt key while selecting the Go menu item. Select Library. Then Library/Caches/com.apple.Safari/Cache.db and move it to the trash.

Go to Safari Preferences/Extensions and turn all extensions off. Test. If okay, turn the extensions on one by one until you figure out what extension is causing the problem.
