Hello djamknacker.

Welcome to Apple Support Communities.

If I'm understanding your post right, WhatsApp crashes after opening, you have been unable to play a specific video within the app, and your iPhone feels warmer than normal while the battery is draining quickly. I certainly understand how important it is to have your iPhone working normally, so I'm happy to help you out with this.

If you're experiencing issues with your phone temperature and battery only when using WhatsApp, it may be possible that WhatsApp is causing your phone to work a lot harder than normal. This would explain why the phone is getting hot. Just in case there could be another reason for the change in temperature, take a look at the information in Keeping iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch within acceptable operating temperatures . After that, check to see if WhatsApp is using an abnormal amount of your battery by following the steps in About the battery usage on your iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch , specifically this section:

Check battery usage

Go to Settings > Battery.

To see how long each app has been open and running in the background, tap User uploaded file. Under each app, you might see these usage types:

  • Background Activity means that your battery is used while apps run in the background.
  • Audio means that apps play audio while running in the background.
  • No Cell Coverage and Low Signal means that your device is searching for a signal or being used with a low signal.
  • Backup & Restore indicates that your device has been backing up to iCloud or restoring from an iCloud backup.
  • Location and Background Location means that your battery was used when tracking your device.

Finally, to address the issue with WhatApp crashing and having problems playing video, follow the troubleshooting steps in If an app you installed unexpectedly quits, stops responding, or won’t open , including the last step under the "Contact the app developer" section.

Take care.
