No Sound output on FCP 10.3

Since upgrading to FCP 10.3, any video that I export does not include audio. My export preferences are set to "Video and Audio". What else do I need to set or check in order to have sound in my output files?

Final Cut Pro X, macOS Sierra (10.12.1), Mac Pro (late 2013)

This seems to have fixed the problem. From an email that I received from Apple support today. I manually had to delete the com.apple.FinalCut.plist. So for some reason Steps 1-3 did not work as described.

I downloaded Pro Video Formats 2.0.5, installed it and fired up FCP and now everything works.

This is Chris from Apple Pro Apps in Cupertino. Thank you for your recent Mac App Store review. We are interested in learning more about your issue. First, it would be useful to know if your issue continues to occur after resetting preferences. To reset your preferences:

  1. Quit Final Cut Pro X.
  2. Hold down the Command and Option keys while reopening Final Cut Pro X. A window will appear asking “Do you want to delete preferences?”
  3. Click Delete Preferences. This command removes the preference files and resets Final Cut Pro X to default settings.

Also, please make sure you have Pro Video Formats 2.0.5 installed:

Did you try just: creating a new library, new project, add a clip or two, share master file - "Video and Audio"? Still no audio? What about Sharing Master File, then choosing Computer? Still no audio?

Also, in previous versions sometimes when changing the export options regarding audio only, or video and audio, etc, these changes sometimes did not stick. Not sure about 10.3, but usually exporting to a different format helped back then.

Hi CRuffini,

I'm sorry to hear that you're still having issues.

After I did the steps that solved my problem, I re-imported the clips into a new library, making sure that they had audio roles, created a new project... and it worked. I am going to do more editing this evening. I'll post the results here.

I was considering Premiere too, I even considered cancelling my Mac Book Pro order and going to windows. I encountered more issues with Adobe, than I am having with FCP, all due to my unfamiliarity with their product. So I decided to stick with the devil that I knew.

This has been SO frustrating! What I've found as a work around is this:

1. Exit out of final cut

2. Hold down option and command together and click on the icon to reopen final cut.

3. Follow the prompt to delete the preferences.

4. Export as usual.

I've tried several times already and this has been the only solution I could find. It's super inefficient, but at least I can meet deadlines.

Hi geverras - What a relief to be back up and running again. Hopefully your fix can help some others with the same/similar problem.

I was actually thinking of writing a post about troubleshooting more upstream to find out if there was perhaps a corrupt camera file or something with the cam to computer connection system.

One thing I'm doing is keeping a couple older computers running with FCPX and only updating one initially. Once the one is up and running smoothly then either finishing files on the older one with the earlier version or moving them over to the newer computer with the newer version. All this while maintaining backups.

Thanks for coming back to us with your fix and we hope to hear from the others to see if it helped them.

I stopped working again after a few days. I've tried all of the suggested solutions, even the one that I previously posted. Now nothing works. 😠 I've abandoned FCP... Using Adobe Premiere now. Adobe works and I don't have the time to spend helping Apple solve it's issues. You had a really good product Apple until you ruined it.

I'm glad to you found a workaround - even though it requires Premiere.

As to ruin things, well, millions of people keep using FCP X, and have upgraded without issue.

Whatever is happening to your installation is not a widespread bug. It seems to affect a few users, but a very small minority. Most likely something in their particular setups, no two of which are the same.
