iCloud storage - "Other documents"...?

Hello. I'll try to explain the whole situation.

Last year I used an app (Seven) for workouts and stuff. I used it for some time and deleted it. Now, more than one year later, I'm starting using it again and I discover that my old data is there, so I have some workouts registered. The point is, how and where did the app get the data? I supposed it was from iCloud, because it was synced with Health and Activity but I have changed my phone and did a fresh iOS install and these things some time ago, so I have no Health data from that time.

But, when I go to my iCloud storage, where I can see all my apps that have data in iCloud, there's no entry for Seven. If I go to iCloud Drive settings, I can see that Seven is marked to store data in iCloud...

But the thing is that the entry for "Other documents" is like almost 300MB. I've checked all my other apps and the documents I can actually access from iCloud Drive (in my Mac and iPhone) and these documents don't even reach 20MB, so there are way more stuff in that "Other documents". What are them and how can I check them? If I go inside it says "Documents and data" and I can only delete the whole thing, but I don't know what they are. Is the Seven data in that "whole thing"? Why it doesn't have its own entry?

For the first issue re: your Seven app, I believe that the app's data was being backed up. If you check Settings > iCloud > Storage > Manage Storage > click on your device and scroll down to see what apps are backing up data.

As for the other issue, those "other documents" could be from items downloaded into the Desktop & Documents folder on a Mac or MacBook (if you have one of those) as part of the new Sierra -- macOS Sierra: Store your desktop and documents in iCloud Drive

For the first point: That's how it should be, but that's what I was saying, there is NO entry for Seven... If it stores data in iCloud, there should be one, right?

And about "Other documents", no, I don't have that option on, and I've counted one by one every file in my iCloud Drive and they don't even reach 20MB.

This is so confusing...

Yes. There I have this:

User uploaded file

0 docs in Keynote, 3 in Pages, 6 books (from iBooks) and PDFs in Preview, and 3 scans in Scanbot. All of them together doesn't reach 20MB. It shows the same in iCloud Drive app for iOS. And, anyway, in iCloud storage page they have their own entry (Keynote, Pages, iBooks, Scanbot) so they don't count on those "Other documents"... WHAT ARE THEY omg. xD

OK, so I spoke to them and they say that "Other documents" are files that Apple OSs can't open (like .avi files and Windows stuff [I'm not sure about this, I've never used Windows and anyway I should be able to SEE them even if I cannot open those files, I had these kind of files in the past in iCloud Drive and I could see them and download]), and things like temporal files and... this stuff that has nothing to do with me and isn't useful. So I can delete them. Strange, this shouldn't take like almost 300MB, but it's what they said.

I deleted them already; Seven data is still there. And I think I didn't lose anything important.

OK; they told me as well that maybe Seven has like an own cloud where they store my data that is linked to my Apple ID, that works like a profile (like Clash of Clans [it works with Game Center, but well...], for example). This doesn't sound logical to me because I've never given access or permission to store critical data as Health data... Even Apple doesn't store Health data in iCloud of these reasons. And...

"Your workouts are only stored locally on your device and to your iCloud account."

This is what Seven support told me when I asked them WHERE the f*@k they store my data, because I (or they) have data from last year after changing my phone and doing like 10 iOS fresh installs... If they, as an app, store data in my iCloud account (or iCloud Drive, as marked in my settings), they MUST have and entry in my iCloud storage list (said by Apple support).

This is driving me crazy lol.

I have a little update. Speaking with the Seven support they tell that I have to go to my iCloud storage page and I should see this (pic sent by them):

User uploaded file

I think this means that it should have an entry. I told them that I can't see that in my devices and other ones (I tried in my father's iPhone) so it's not just my problem. So they change the support guy and the new one tell me that "the workouts don’t show up there cause they don’t use up your iCloud quota, we don’t save documents in iCloud that way".

This took me to search what "ways" a developer can save data in iCloud, and I found this in an Apple document:

"Many Kinds of iCloud Storage

There are four iCloud storage APIs to choose from. To pick the right one (or combination) for your app, make sure you understand the purpose and capabilities of each. The iCloud storage types are:

  • Key-value storage for discrete values, such as preferences, settings, and simple app state.
  • iCloud document storage for user-visible file-based information such as word-processing documents, drawings, and complex app state.
  • Core Data storage for shoebox-style apps and server-based, multidevice database solutions for structured content. iCloud Core Data storage is built on iCloud document storage and employs the same iCloud APIs.
  • CloudKit storage for managing structured data in iCloud yourself and for sharing data among all of your users."

So, anyone can explain me if there is one of these that can save docs in iCloud in a way that I can't see it in my iCloud storage page or anywhere else? Supposing that Seven doesn't have an external way to store data, since they say that its all an iCloud thing.

Hi again. lol. I continued speaking with them and they told me that they use another kind of data. Every app has 1MB for settings, etc. for iCloud sync. So searching a bit more I think it's the Key-value storage. It makes sense because in the app I can't modify the workouts or erase them separately, so it looks like very... "plain" and simple information. The pic they sent to me where you can see the entry in iCloud storage I suppose it's from an earlier version where this wasn't like now.

So that it's, finally. I solved it myself lol. See you.
