AIM connection error occurred. The server message was: Conn:StartupFailure

Help!! The problems started with the inability to do video chat, then all of a sudden I cannot log on with any of my AIM accounts (.mac and AOL). I keep getting this message. I've searched on this forum and tried all the port changes, turned firewall off, repaired permissions, deleated kechain info and re-entered my account info. Any help would be greatly appreciated. iChat was working perfectly. I have no idea.
thanks!

Hi Macperk,

I have nothing new to add on the first stages of iCAR and any possible reference to it in com.apple.ichat.plist.

I think now you should get a trial of IPNetMonitorX
Use the icon on that page to download.

Use this to do UDP Port scans.

These have to be done to an IP.
Start with a friendly Buddy who will tell you their Public IP

You type in the port you want to scan and the IP to test against. If it fails it writes No Respomnse in little letters at the bottom.

Test these ports singularly: 5060, 5678, 5190 All on UDP.
Then the group 16384 - 16403 Again on UDP as this is why we are using this utility.

Then test the server IP that is issuing the ISP's public IP to you.

This will tell you:-
1) if there is any block.
2) may point out if it is local to you.

This presumes that:-
a) the Mac Firewall has iChat ports set if it is ON
b) the modem has those ports open if using Port Forwarding or Port Triggering.

hi macperk,

Ok that suggest the ports are open to some extent.

The missing ones from the group of 20 are not going to stop 1-1 video or audio chats that take up 4 ports.

The next thing to ask is whether your ISP offers a VoIP service.
Voice over Internet (VoIP) uses SIP to communicate to SIP servers that mediate connections. iChat uses one called SNATMAP
Some smaller ISPs block this port to prevent cheap international calls: Some provide their own equipment and therefore also block the use of Vonage and other brands.
iChat is blocked as a consequence because it too uses SIP to connect calls.

OF course having equipment like a Vonage adapter and placing it in-line between the computer and modem will also cause problems as they tend to take all SIP data even if it not for the phone it is connected to.

Hi macperk,

Quizz him or her on the SIP port 5060 thing.

One last thing on this area. Some modems are SIP aware. They tend to have SIP "Bound" to port 5060.

This tends to show as intermittent success.
Group 1 is succesful all the time
A second group of now and then buddies and a larger group of No success what-so-ever buddies.
Alcatels (Speedtouch) and some Draytecks are in this group of modems.

On some this Binding can be undone.
