Unknown Error 4450/4280 for Philips (NOT SONY)

I have been trying to figure out why I am getting these errors, and I have found absolutely no help.
It seems that Apple's support site it set up to purposely make it difficult.
Not only is iTunes getting unknown errors every time I try to burn a CD, but also, when I import CDs I get static.
I'm requesting that someone help me, hopefully someone without a mac.
My diagnostics:

If you have multiple drives on the same IDE or SCSI bus, these drives may interfere with each other.
Some computers need an update to the ATA or IDE bus driver, or Intel chipset. If iTunes has problems recognizing CDs or hanging or crashing while importing or burning CDs, check the support site for the manufacturer of your computer or motherboard.

okay, then this appears to be our page:

XPS/Dimension 400/9150 / Microsoft Windows XP

there's nothing there by way of new firmware for the Phillips (Dell keeps firmware updates for optical drives down in the "Removable Media Storage Devices" section on these sorts of pages). but it's still worth checking through there, because there's an urgent chipset update and also an update for your Radeon X300 SE listed there. (chipset and video card updates can help with an importing/burning issue.)

if you're uncertain whether or not you're up to date on any of the relevant components there, click the Drivers and Downloads help link to the right of the page, and click on the "I'm Not Sure What Downloads I Need" link.

if you've got third party (non-Dell-supplied) componentry in the PC, the following document might be of some help:

Updating the drivers on your Windows PC

... if no joy with the "making sure you're up-to-date" startegy, let's try checking through the additional suggestions from these documents:

You can't import or play music from an audio CD in iTunes for Windows

iTunes for Windows: Additional troubleshooting for burning issues

I tried "choose a device for download"\"removable media storage devices"\"Philips DROM6316 HH SATA 16X DVDROM"
When I tried to open the file, it said that the driver was not allowed to be upgraded.

I'm not sure if I chose the right device. I don't understand this deep into computers.

I had tried the other two apple help pages, and hadn't been able to fix anything. Any other suggestions?

boredfairy--This Philips DVD burner is a disaster! If you go on the Dell discussion boards you'll find that NO ONE had luck with this particular piece of equipment. (Although, I noticed that recently these boards were scrubbed a bit. So--maybe you'll just have to take my word for this.) Please know that internal DVD burners are not that expensive. I chalked this mistake (YES--I owned this infamous DVD burner and I still have the skelton if someone wants it for posterity!) up to ignorance on DVD burners. I threw in the towel months ago and now I own a great Plextor DVD+/- burner. You may have to bite the bullet and replace this "gem". I am so sorry!

just checking, samdogmom. which Philips drive did you have?

(boredfairy says s/he tried to apply a firmware update for a Philips drive ... but it wasn't the firmware for the drive that is actually showing up in his/her diagnostics.)

if you've got the time, would you mind walking boredfairy through checking on other Dell updates? there was clearly some kind of horrible failure of communication. so i don't know if s/he's checked on any of the other updates i mentioned.

(hoping that your hands-on experience with Dells might come up trumps here.)

naah, it's just one of those things where it would be helpful if someone was seeing the sorts of things you're seeing on your screen when you're checking on updates.

(I can see all the help documentation that Dell is giving. but since belladonna isn't a Dell, there's a limit to how much additional information on the checking/updating process i can give to you. thinking someone with a Dell might be able to help more with that.)

And if I can add something--Firmware DID not solve burning problems. The drive was simply inadequate! I know I could have fought for a replacement--but who wants another problem? (I was too tired to convince Dell that the Philips drive was a piece of s**t! (sorry, but it was!)

I googled to find the best DVD-dual layer burner out there 12-18 months ago and then I went for it. My Plextor drive may have cost approx. $150 (maybe a little more--sorry I don't keep good records on this because it WOULD DEPRESS ME!) but I have never regreted this purchase--and it has never failed me!

🙂 thank you kindly for the assist and the heads-up, samdogmom!

do you mind if occasionally i call on you for a bit of hands-on assistance like this with Dells, or NIS 2007? (for some things, there really is no substitute for having one sitting in front of you.)

yesterday my NIS 2006 "upgrade now" clock began to tick, but i've still got a month before taking the plunge into 2007.

I don't know if this will help anyone with the same problem that I had. My computer was still under warantee so I replaced my CD Rom drive, and found out that when I have a single drive for both cd and dvd it needs to be cleaned with a certain thing that works for both spindles. That's really technical and doesn't completely make sense to me. But if you ask tech support for your type of computer, you should be able to figure out how to clean it.

In my case, it was not only dusty, but one of the spindles was broken. I hope some of that made sense. ^-^
