I need a a second hard drive for a Macpro

Hello i need a little advise here
I need 250GB or more internal hard drive, i will use it for video editing FCP
i will install myself the hard drive it appears to be easy.
can anyone help me, Which is the next step after i install the internal hard drive

Mac pro and G5 quad, Mac OS X (10.4.8)

Raid Edition drives from Western Digital have higher reliability and environmental tolerance. I'd get this one over the Maxtor, personally.

In a RAID enviroment I'd go for a WD RE/RE2 drive over a Maxtor DiamondMax as well. However, if you were to consider a Maxtor MaXLine III/Pro that would be a different matter.

I just brought for a very good price a Western
Digital 500 GB WD Caviar SE 16 7200 RPM SATA internal
Hard Drive.

it works great. i have 2 of those drives as well as a 250gb version. best buy has the 500gb version on sale this week for $150 which is the cheapest i've seen it for, cheaper then the OEM versions at newegg.

Ned, when you say the WD RE2 is best for RAID. Are you saying hardware raid or internal Mac Pro software raid?

Or, what I mean is...Is is not worth getting (3) WD RE2's and raiding them internally on the Mac Pro and would better be suited for an external array?

If I'm not mistaken. The Mac Pro is only software raid, right?

Either. Even though hardware RAID does go faster than software RAID the principles are the same and the drive requirements are the same.

I find that the internal Mac Pro RAID 0 implementation to run extremely well for a software RAID. I am however a little disappointed with the RIAD 1 implementation and would have expected somewhat better read performance.

Would they go better in an external array with a hardware controller, sure. It really comes down to your budget, usage and expectations. I'm personally happy with my internal 4 drive RAID 0.

no matter what, DO NOT BUY A SEAGATE.

get a Hitachi Deskstar, a WD Raptor, or a WD RE2. anything else is a waste of time.

i speak from experience. Seagate drives are extremely suspect in quality. they used to be awesome, but, not anymore...
