Apple Watch Series 2 Microphone Not Working

Hey,

I have recently bought the Apple Watch Series 2 and I decided to go for a swim. When I got out of the water, I realized that microphone stopped working. I decided to charge it and let it dry overnight, but no luck. Should I wait longer or is there a problem?

Thanks so much,

Jonah.

Well this is starting to sound all too familiar...😠

Took my Nike+ 42mm Series 2 for a swim two days ago, did a timed set, locked and ejected water fine, gave me all the right info and appeared ok... Awoke the following day to a mic not working. Ive done everything recommended in these posts from my own technical knowledge and following an hour on the phone to Apple Support in Ireland this afternoon (complete with a remote diagnostic), I was advised to book a engineer appointment. Strange however, the diagnostics came back all clear, suggesting (if the mic is part of the test platform) that there may still be water stuck in the mic aperture (my thoughts, not Apple).... So Im awaiting a Genius bar appointment rather than send the watch off to be 'Looked at.'

I wouldn't mind, but Ive only had it out of its box since 27th December. So far, it equates to about £35 usage per day before it broke... not the best Apple experience so far...😟

I have the exact same issue - went for a swim in the pool last weekend & mic/SIRI stopped working on my Apple watch 2 sport... Took it to the Genius bar yesterday & they sent it off to check what the issue is. However, they told me that they would charge me $229 to repair it (although its certainly under warranty since I've only had it for two months!) in case they find some sort of water damage?!? To me this sounds a bit ridiculous & contradictory of what Apple advertises - i.e. series 2 being waterproof up to 50 meters! Another "surprise' was that the associate at the store told me that apparently it can only be in water for 30 min or less at a time! Which I also don't recall being stated in any of the commercials... Have to wait 3 - 5 days for the "verdict"...holding fingers crossed that it will be fixed free of charge & won't happen again...

Same thing just happened to me, I called apple support and we found that unpairing the watch and repairing it to the phone did the trick. When repairing, set up as a new watch and DO NOT restore it with the previous backup. Your watch will delete anything you had on it but the mic will work. To unpair the watch, go to the watch app, click on the picture of the watch, and press unpair. It worked for me maybe it can help.

Same issue here. My mic eventually works but it takes longer to recover each time. I'm on my 8th swim. The unlock process makes sense for the speaker concern , but i dont see how it helps the mic. This seems like a major design flaw since swimming functions are a big part of watch 2. I have big concerns on long term reliability for this function😕.

My Apple Watch S2 went in the shower with me on the third day of owning it. The mic was dead immediately after getting out. Then, I sent it to the depot for repair/replacement. They sent me a brand-new device. I took it into the shower on day one. The mic died instantly again. However, it came back a day later. I brought the Watch into the Genius Bar and they determined that after the water sound lock thing, all operations should return to normal. However, they didn't, at all. So, they shipping the second Watch back to the depot for review. I wonder what will happen next. Clearly Apple didn't put enough time into the microphone issue. When I got my iPhone 7+ wet, nothing changed. I literally took the iPhone into the pool with me and it was fine. The Watch, not so much.

This advice inspired me to try something when I found my Series 2 mic wasn't working. I got a glass of clean water and immersed the watch in it briefly. After retrieving it and clearing the water lock (I think I had to do that twice) the mic was cleared. My assumption is that a residue from a brief immersion in a hot tub a week ago was blocking the mic and the fresh water could dissolve it. Subjectively the speaker also sounds louder now. Thanks!

Hi Jonah ..

See:

What should I do if my Apple Watch got wet, and now its speaker sounds muffled? > About Apple Watch water resistance - Apple Support

Apple Watch Series 2

When you start a swimming workout, your Apple Watch automatically locks the screen with Water Lock to avoid accidental taps. When you're done, turn the Digital Crown to unlock the screen and clear any water from your Apple Watch. You hear sounds and may feel some water on your wrist.

To manually clear water from Apple Watch, swipe up on the bottom of the watch face to open Control Center, tap Water Lock, then turn the Digital Crown to unlock the screen and clear water from the speaker.

Hi

Assuming that you also first dried your Apple Watch with a nonabrasive, lint-free cloth, it may help to check the following settings on your iPhone:

  • Settings > General > Keyboard - check that Enable Dictation is turned on.
  • Settings > General > Restrictions - check that the restriction for Siri & Dictation is not enabled.
  • Settings > General > Siri - disable, pause for a few moments and then re-enable Siri.

If the issue persists, I suggest that you contact Apple Support (mail-in service may be available) or make a Genius Bar reservation with a view to to arranging for your watch to be inspected and, if recommended, serviced or replaced under warranty:

Be sure not to insert anything into the microphone port or to shake your watch to remove any remaining water.
