Permissions, keychains passwords, System preferences keep changing & lost files.

About a month ago I was playing/importing music with a (3rd party) media player while cooking dinner. All of the sudden the music stopped. My MBP had changed to a different user. I thought that I got hacked or something. So I changed my password and disconnected the external hard drive's that music was playing from. I locked myself out of my Mac because I was actually in guest user. I think the media player opened it because the files were from old iTunes libraries, guest user and shared folders. I think I ended up losing files in this process and permissions got changed. πŸ˜• I've tried...disk utility first aid, booted in safe mode, keychain first aid, back up to Time Machine & reinstall OS X, delete 3rd party apps, install some updates and now this. Please help?? BTW I'm kinda new at trying to fix it myself. If more info is needed let me know.

Thanks.

Unistall the Soundflower driver > Uninstalling Soundflower

That driver has caused kernel panics for numerous Mac users as noted from the results of an Apple Support Communities search here.

Also, your Mac is getting low on available storage: Macintosh HD (disk1) / [Startup]: 249.77 GB (37.19 GB free)

Keep in mind, OS X requires approximately 9GB's of storage without taking in to account all your data.

Anti virus software is unnecessary on a Mac. Uninstall McAfee > https://community.mcafee.com/thread/54519?tstart=0

And go to /Library/StartupItems and remove the following:

M-AudioXponent: Path: /Library/StartupItems/M-AudioXponent

Startup items no longer function in OS X Yosemite or later

Reinstall your Kodak software and uninstall McAfee.

McAfee Uninstall Resources is near bottom of the page

Might be a corrupt .plist.

Do a backup, preferably 2 backups on 2 separate drives.

Quit the application.

Go to Finder and select your user/home folder. With that Finder window as the front window, either select Finder/View/Show View options or go command - J. When the View options opens, check ’Show Library Folder’. That should make your user library folder visible in your user/home folder. Select Library. Then go to Preferences/com.apple.systempreferences.plist. Move the .plist to your desktop.

Restart the computer, open the application, and test. If it works okay, delete the plist from the desktop.

If the application is the same, return the .plist to where you got it from, overwriting the newer one.

Thanks to leonie for some information contained in this.

Mac keeps asking for the login keychain password

Try running Keychain Access/First Aid and resetting the original keychain.

Nov 10, 2016 1:01 PM in response to Eric Root

Thanks again Eric Root and Carolyn Samit. Things are looking a little bit better. How do I fix my storage problems? The external hard drive's that I do have one is almost completely full and the other is 500 GB drive that I used for time machine. When I cleared the 500 GB drive to use. I moved all files onto a 1 TB external drive. I think that it mdworker or md(something) rewrote stuff on MacBook Pro from my externals or a little bit of both. So I am afraid to connect my ExtHD's because I don't want files to revert. Also I have been having problems with my display or graphics.

I've received this message or similar messages from window server.

CGContextSetFillColorWithColor: invalid context 0x0. This is a serious error. This application, or a library it uses, is using an invalid context and is thereby contributing to an overall degradation of system stability and reliability. This notice is a courtesy: please fix this problem. It will become a fatal error in an upcoming update

Please help I don't want do you have to replace my Mac anytime soon.

Thanks and please let me know if more information is needed.

Nov 10, 2016 1:36 PM in response to Eric Root

I replied below Eric Root on this feed. I did mention your and thank'd you. I'm not sure how the discussions work exactly. I just wanted to make sure that you were able to see my progress and continue to help. As of now it doesn't seem that I have issues with keychains anymore. I did follow instructions listed and signed out of iCloud and sign back in.

Thanks again.

For your storage the options are basically

  1. Upgrade the SSD to something larger… see this for info if you want to do it yourself (or go to an Apple service centre/ Store) https://www.ifixit.com/Guide/MacBook+Pro+15-Inch+Retina+Display+Mid+2012+SSD+Rep lacement/9706
  2. Move files of your internal disk, there are many posts here on finding & removing files, but you should make a backup first. Your backup is out of date.

mdworker is the 'spotlight indexer' it has to run on all disks that you want to search files. It will not 'revert' files, it simply indexes the file content to enable searching. Time Machine may backup new files if the disk is setup as a backup destination. Whatever the situation a disk that you are afraid to connect is not very useful to you.

Your backups are turned off so if your main disk dies you could lose everything newer than a few weeks ago (October 26th). It is probably a good idea to address this situation - either get a new backup disk or re-enable them.

As for this log message you need to read or post more full info - A specific application is causing it, however you have not included that apps name so we cannot really help you remove the error. The message is Apple warning the developer to update their app to stop using older code. You may just need to upgrade the app if you can work out what it is called.

Dec 9, 2016 2:13 PM in response to Drew Reece

I'm not sure if I should start a new discussion or not. I have updated my MacBook Pro, iPhones and my iPad. I also had a new modem put in today from AT&T. I'm still having problems. Also here are some screenshots of my storage problems.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Dec 9, 2016 2:58 PM in response to justgalen

I don't see any problem with the disk in those images…

The first 2 images show the entire disk (the partition table) - that is why all of it is used up. The 3rd & 4th images show the entire OS volume - that is why it has free space.

Etrecheck seems to agree with the disk size, it seems quite normal to me.

I'd enable your Time Machine backups.

The console messages seem harmless, my console shows many thousands of messages each day. They are not always a bad sign, just software trying to pass on info about what it is doing.

As Eric suggested, it is how the Mac runs that is important.

Dec 9, 2016 3:24 PM in response to Drew Reece

Thank you Drew Reese for the two replies and link to increase the internal hard drive.

Some of the reasons why I am concerned is because of apparently signing into fraudulent AT&T web sites. I then spoke to someone possibly an impersonator at AT&T. I downloaded the McAfee antivirus from that site. Which turned out not to be any good. I'm concerned with all of my past backups to be infected with a virus or something. Will my version of OS sierra 10.12.1 fix any issues or stop any meta-data from corrupting my MacBook Pro? So you're saying that this frequent amount of activity is normal?

Dec 9, 2016 5:02 PM in response to justgalen

Many of those messages are caused by the search criteria that you have provided to Console app!

I don't know what the correct syntax is but it will stop when you adjust your search query πŸ™‚

Perhaps you need an 'and' or an 'or' in the query?

e.g. MESSAGE TYPE: error or MESSAGE TYPE: fault

Preview looks like it is complaining about a missing value in a plist file - nothing worth worrying about in my opinion.

I don't know about the AT&T logins I also can't say if the Mac is clean, it looks fine from here but I cannot know what else is not shown in the reports.

If you need to be 100% sure it is clean all you can do is erase & reinstall without using the backup, but that may be more than you want to do.

Dec 9, 2016 6:48 PM in response to Drew Reece

Thanks again for the reply Drew.

I did not put any search quarry in the search field. That is from the section on the left that is highlighted errors and faults. Did you notice all those errors and faults are within about 1 minute? If I back up with Time Machine do I need more than a 500 GB external hard drive? I thought that was plenty since my MacBook Pro only has 250 GB of storage. I can also provide more screenshots or whatever else needed for someone to look at. Or should I start a new discussion?

Thanks,

Galen
