How do I convert AIFF song files in iTunes to ACC files to fit iPod?

How do I convert AIFF song files in iTunes to ACC files to fit iPod? My AIFF files are appartently bigger per song than ACC files. How do I convert an AIFF song or playlist in iTunes to ACC files so they take up less room. Right now I can only fit 50 songs as opposed to 500 songs. The songs are already in iTunes as AIFF files. Most of the songs I inport are original songs from CD's that are already AIFF files. How do I convert them when going into my iPod?

iTunes prefs -> Advanced -> Importing.
Set it to AAC and the bitrate you want (Recommend 160 kbps).

Then select the songs and menu Advanced -> Convert to AAC.
This will make copy (not replace) the songs. You can then delete the AIFF.

Thank you so much! I now know how to convert AIFF audio files to ACC files, and I can keep the original AIFF file! One other concern though -- how do I tell which is the bigger AIFF file and which is the new smaller ACC file? iTunes doesn't have an obvious place/window that tells me the audio file size. Is there a way to tell the two apart. It looks like it creates an identical file name, not even a "copy" extension or anything -- so it's impossible to tell them apart. Is there another secret here?

Control click on column header.
Tick kind.
They will show as AIFF or AAC audio file.
You can create Smart playlists to do this also.

You've solved the mystery for me -- thank you so much! The ACC conversion seems to only have a 128 kbps setting and not a 160 kbps as you recommended. Is 128 kbps still acceptable for good quality audio?

128 kbps is the default for iTunes.
Go to iTunes prefs -> Advancd - Importing.
At Setting", select Custom to change it to something else if you want.

Convert to a few different settings and see how it sounds to you. Personally, I use 160 kbps.
