iPhone 7 Plus Matte Black Paint Chipped

I have been using iPhone 7 Plus Matt Black for about one month with fully covered by a TPU casing and full screen tempered glass most of the time. I just open the casing once a week to wipe the dust off from the phone. Until yesterday when I take off the casing, and notice there is something at the edge of the phone body next to UP Volume button. At first I thought it just the dust. I try to wipe it using microfibre cloth as usual. Until I look closely it is the metal part of the body. It seems that the black anodised paint had been chipped off from the phone body. I am really disappointed with what happen to the phone because I was using it very careful.

I have chat with Apple Customer Support and it is not covered under warranty since it is under cosmetic damage. Seems that the anodised paint quality on iPhone 7 is same as what is on iPhone 5. The iPhone 7 body paint will chipped at anytime regardless you are using it very careful. Just to share with you guys 😉User uploaded fileUser uploaded file

What is really the most annoying thing is the future value of our phones is Zero.

Who will want to purchase the phone secondhand with marks all over it.

I've always sold my old phones when I have upgraded to the newer model and always got a great price.

In the past I've only had silver and they have been pristine. I bet I'll have trouble giving mine away.

Very expensive lesson learnt !

I have enquiried about having a new casing put on ( at my expense ) but have had no replies :-(

Yeah it's a terrible feeling, the service technician that got to me said he has to Push the report to his senior technician for further assessment and will get back to me in a day or two.

Kinda crappy if you ask me , my phone is barely 3 weeks old , I bought red cause I thought it was pretty , now I'm seriously considering buying a DBdrand skin to stick on my phone , at least the DBrand finish won't peel off unlike the Apple one

Apple might as well make a new Colour called polka dot.

A skin is like a sticker that usually covers the entire metal section of the iphone , you can do a quick Google search for iphone skins , there are a few companies offering them , but I like dbrand best, since that is the company that I see the most people using, but your mileage of the Brand’s may vary.

I'm not sure if mine will even get replaced , we don't have an official Apple service center here , there are only authorised service Centers here, but I heard from people that claiming warranty from them is close to impossible.

Hi

I had the same issue. Mine was around the grill area and quite bad!!!

anyways long story short I went to the store and they basically said its cosmetic and not covered under warranty. the brent cross store in London - manager was very rude indeed. Another manager later called me (after I complained to their customer service) and he was very nice on the phone about the issue and invited me back the store to see for himself. I went back but he wasn't there and again another manager said no way would they replace. its cosmetic issue - but nicer about it this time. I complained again as it wasn't my fault etc. I looked after the phone, no damage at all just shoddy paint job! I was advised by customer service to try another store - this time regent street in London. The were nice but again manager said nope :O( "its cosmetic and not covered under apple warranty". He confirmed he had discretion to replace the phone but unfortunately for me didn't feel it would be right to do so!

I had private insurance on the phone so decided to make a claim via them. they authorised the claim and offered to reimburse me any costs I incurred from apple for fixing the phone. I booked an appointment with apple store this time in Covent garden London. When the genie guy came over I asked how much to fix this. he looked at it and said wow that needs to be replaced. its an obvious defect!!! I could have fainted :O) he then proceeded to get me a replacement , did the paperwork and that was that. I didn't pay a penny. the replacement was made under warranty. didn't even have to make a claim with my insurer.

happy days.

so my advice is keep trying. speak and write to customer service. give them feedback and try different stores. in the first stores I tried and went on the defensive and started stating I did nothing wrong etc. at the last store I just immediately said how much to fix this? maybe its reverse psychology! lol you say left they say right, you say right they have to say left.

in some of the stores the staff can act like little hitlers - its true. but boy when you meet someone nice and kind from the stores it really helps you keep the faith in Apple. and at the end of the day that's one of the big reasons I buy Apple ... or that's one of the reasons I did!

anyways good luck!

Hi, I tried it too in the Convent Garden store but they didn't replace my phone, third time I try a different Apple store.

I was advised in the store to try to scalate this issue through Apple support.

Today I was lucky and got transferred to an awesome Senior Advisor that knew about this issue and immediately set up a mail-in repair. No cost for this as they'll replace the phone free of charge.

It's just been two days that I own my new Matte Black iPhone 7 and sadly the top volume button paint has started to come out and the aluminium below is visible. I owned an iPhone 6 Space Grey for 2 years and never faced such an issue. Should have researched more before buying. It really feels bad to pay such an hefty amount for a phone and suddenly you feel your phone is looking old in just two days of use. 😟 This is really bad Apple.

Hey guys I've just had success with apple on this problem!
My Jet Black iPhone 7 started to flake around both of the speaker/microphone grills on the bottom and I managed to gain some sympathy by the repair place I went to and they sent it away, here I am a week later with a new phone replacement! I'm so happy, hope it all works out with your problems!
Note: Im in New Zealand

This happened with me too. Colour started coming off the bottom grill on the right side.

Initially, I contacted Apple Store with a Genius Bar appointment, and explained to them that the colour is coming off without any abrasion or point of contact. The employee there agreed that there was indeed no abuse to iPhone, but told me that the only way he could address this issue was by registering it as a "accidental damage", requiring me to pay 359€ for changing the body. Though the employee there understood my situation, he was helpless, and told me to contact Apple Support for this issue.

Later, I did contact Apple Support via chat, and explained the same stuff, along with pictures. They considered it, and set up an appointment again with Apple Store, saying that the store would assess my device and would be able to see an exception in my case. I just went to store today, they saw the device, and agreed to replace it free of cost.

I think that though Apple tells about cosmetic damage on first meeting, you may pursue the case by clearly explaining them why it is Apple's fault. Worked for me.

Cheers!
