Sync option grayed out in Windows 10 with iTunes 12.5.3

I purchased and sync'd my iPhone 6s in March of this year and had been syncing to iTunes just fine until I went to update it to iOS 10. Now, I will admit I don't do regular syncs/backups but now I get two options no matter what:

1) Set up as new iPhone

2) Restore from backup - my backups from March aren't even listed. It shows a backup from February which was on my previous iPhone 5 device.

What are my options now? I want to use iTunes and be able to sync. I know I can use iCloud but that isn't my preference at this time. I did back up to iCloud and update the iOS to 10.

I want to know why my sync option is grayed out. Please help. iTunes should not be treating my device like it is new.

Have you swapped computers, set up a new user profile, or had your library reset in some fashion? The set up as new device or restore from backup screen is a bit confusing. Set up as new device (which is what you want) allows iTunes to register the device so it can recognize it in future, it won't actually change any content on it.

See Empty/corrupt iTunes library after upgrade/crash if content went AWOL from your library or Recover your iTunes library from your iPod or iOS device if you're connecting the device to a new computer and want to recover content from it.

Thanks for your response. When I received those options, I took it as "set up as new" meant it would wipe my device and that would wipe vital apps I use for work so I was in panic mode lol. However, I was about to just set it up as new but decided to add some music files in before I started, and after I added those files, for whatever reason it gave me the sync option. Crazy, but I did get it working.
