"No bag entry" when trying to reinstall Sierra

Have an Imac late 2009 that was donated by my boss so that I could use it in my art department - I wanted to wipe and reinstall clean.

In recovery mode I select "Reinstall macOS", click continue and it says "To download and restore macOS, your computers eligibility will be verified with Apple" (Knowing that it will need internet access to do this, I turn on the wi-fi and connect successfully) ... I click continue and it says "Loading installation information..." After about 45 seconds it times out and throws up "NO BAG ENTRY". Can't do anything after that other than going through the same process again. Restarted, nothing.

How I got here:

I wanted to wipe it clean to give to one my team members so I did the following:

- The Imac was a relative of my boss and he did not know the password - so I managed to reset it in single user mode. http://www.macyourself.com/2009/08/03/how-to-reset-your-mac-os-x-password-withou t-an-installer-disc/

- It was barely used with literally nothing on the HD but still running Snow Leopard. I figured it would be best to upgrade to the latest possible OS before wiping. I didn't think I'd be able to get it to the latest in recovery mode, so I figured I could manage the upgrade upfront and then wipe.

- I used my personal icloud login to gain access to the later OS updates through the "purchases" tab in the App Store. Otherwise, there was nothing available in the app store for the jump to Lion and beyond.

- At some point in this process I installed this patch from Apple before getting it up to Sierra, but I dont believe it helped in anyway. Mac App Store Update for OS X Snow Leopard

- Keep in mind, I'm doing all of this through Wi-fi because the ethernet port is either faulty or there is something up with it. (I had read that a security update for Snow Leopard at some point basically rendered the port useless, but there was a way to fix it.) I tried running this before the wipe - to no avail. https://9to5mac.com/2016/02/28/apple-confirms-os-x-update-broke-ethernet-port-on -some-macs-heres-how-to-fix/

- I upgrade successfully to Sierra, but the app store is blank. Just sits there gray and you cannot select any of the tabs. I tried playing around with my internet connection but I could get on to make the necessary follow-up upgrades to Sierra (Safari worked fine, internet was on - ran diagnostics).

- Growing tired of trying different things, I decided to start up in Recovery mode and do an erase and reinstall. In hindsight I probably should have remedied the app store issue and upgraded to the very latest Sierra, but I figured I could take care of it after reinstalling again.

So that takes me to where I am now and my issue -

My guess is it cannot verify the eligibility because of something to do with how the app store was non-responsive before I erased the HD.

I'm stuck and can't do a thing to reinstall. Any advice?

I got the "no bag entry" error as well; in my case I was reformatting my hard drive to try to address some random application hang events. It turns out that I was getting this "no bag entry" error because I was not connected to any network. I could use the wireless icon in the menu bar to select my home wireless network, after which time I installed Sierra without issue.

You will have to start using the original Snow Leopard discs that came with the computer when it was new. If you don't have them, then you can purchase the last retail Snow Leopard DVD:

You can purchase Snow Leopard through the Apple Store:Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard - Apple Store (U.S.). The price is $19.99 plus tax. You will be sent physical media by mail after placing your order. After you install Snow Leopard you will have to download and install the Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1 to update Snow Leopard to 10.6.8 and give you access to the App Store.

Once you receive that disc, then do the following. Snow Leopard Erase and Install:

  1. Insert Snow Leopard DVD into the optical drive and restart the computer.
  2. Immediately upon hearing the chime hold down the C key.
  3. Release the key when the Apple logo appears, and wait for the loading to finish.
  4. After the installer loads, select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After Disk Utility loads select the out-dented disk entry from the side list (mfgr.'s ID and drive size.) Click on the Partition tab in the Disk Utility’s right window. Set the number of partitions to one (1) from the drop down menu. Click on the Options button and select GUID, click on OK, set the format type to MacOS Extended, Journaled. Finally, click on the Apply button.
  5. After formatting has finished quit Disk Utility. Continue with the OS X installation and follow the directions.
  6. When the installation has finished, the computer will restart into the Setup Assistant. After you complete the Setup Assistant you will be running a fresh installation of Snow Leopard. Open Software Update and install the recommended updates.
  7. If you are planning to sell or give your computer away, then do the following: After you reformat your hard drive and reinstall Snow Leopard, the computer restarts to a Welcome screen. To leave the Mac in an OOTB (Out Of The Box) state, don't continue with the setup. Instead, press Command and Q keys to shut down the computer. The Setup Assistant will guide the new owner through the setup process after he/she turns on the computer.
  8. Download and install Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1. if needed. It is not needed if you are selling or giving away the computer.

From here you can download El Capitan from the App Store and install it. Your model does not meet the requirements for Sierra.

You stated you wanted to wipe it. Is that incorrect? Or did you mean an Erase and Install? Unfortunately, you cannot remove the connection to a previous owner's Apple ID associated with all the installed software including OS X. To do that you must completely wipe the drive. This cannot be done from a Recovery HD because doing so does not remove the Recovery HD. What you need to do is a complete wipe. What I outlined is how you must do that on all Macs that came with Snow Leopard or earlier pre-installed when new. Yours is one of those Macs. You cannot do a full Network Install on that model.

Yes. Got it, you are correct. Thanks for the help!

I'm glad I held onto one of our original Snow Leopard disks and thankfully, the optical drive was functional. Wiped the drive and ran the installation according to your directions. Got it all the way up to 10.6.8.

But now I've encountered a new problem. Cannot connect to the App Store. Internet connection is fine (Safari working). Also installed this patch and it did not do the trick.

About the Mac App Store Update for OS X Snow Leopard - Apple Support

Without the App store I can't upgrade. Also tried signing into MobileMe with a valid account and it does not work. Says "unknown validation error", which I believe is eerily similar to my original issue.

What happens when you try connecting to the App Store? Do you have an iTunes account with your Apple ID and password? You cannot use a MobileMe account. You can create an Apple ID, password, and new account via the App Store: Creating an iTunes Store, App Store, iBooks Store, and Mac App Store account without a credit card. You can use this to create an account with a credit card if you wish. If you do not, then you can only download items that are free.

If you have an account already, then use it. If there are problems with the account see:

I can't connect to the App Store, or ITunes.

App Store has the icon and grey screen and says "Cannot connect to the App Store"

In iTunes you get the candy cane "Accessing iTunes Store..." for about 10 min and then it says something to the tune of "iTunes cannot connect to the iTunes Store. The secure network connection was refused... make sure your network connection is active and try again".

Does this have anything to do with the ethernet port not working? Wifi is fine and working. But it seems to be looking for the ethernet port? Is it tied to this:

If the Ethernet connection on your Mac stopped working recently - Apple Support

So I tried running a sudo softwareupdate --background

Also checked the time and date, thinking it was a verification issue based on that. Everything was correct.

Didn't help. Ugh.

Thanks for sticking with me on this Kappy.

I don't know, but if you have a working Wi-Fi connection then it shouldn't matter. The errors you report would suggest you have no connection to the Internet. Open Network preferences to be sure your Ethernet port is turned off since you say it does not work or just remove the Ethernet cable from your computer. Wi-Fi should be the topmost entry in your port list in Network. But I have no help for the connection problem. Are you sure you are upgraded to 10.6.8?

Nov 18, 2016 6:05 AM in response to Kappy

Yes, fully upgraded to 10.6.8.

I turned off the ethernet connection, no help. Whats weird is that before I did the erase and install I was using the app store and I was able to use my iCloud credentials to use the downloads in the past purchases to upgrade all the way to Sierra. So its not an office/firewall thing either (we use the app store on several computers to upgrade)

So maybe going all the way up to 10.6.8 was part of the problem. I think im going to reinstall Snow Leopard again, but this time see if the app store is working at the ground level.

Thanks again for your help.

If your Snow Leopard DVD installs any Snow Leopard version below 10.6.6 then you cannot access the App Store. You must update Snow Leopard to 10.6.8 in order to get the App Store.

Why not try reinstalling the 10.6.8 update. Be sure to use this one: Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1.

What you can do differently after installing Snow Leopard from the DVD is to open Software Update and let it update Snow Leopard for you.
