MacBook Pro late 2016 three finger drag issue

Not sure if this is a general problem with MacBook Pro late 2016 or just my machine is having this problem. Try to enable three finger drag on it and do a 3 finger drag gesture on bottom left of the trackpad, there are 40% chance that it's wrongly detected as secondary click. Sometimes it failed to detect 3 finger drag at the middle of the trackpad as well.. this is really annoying as this is one of the most used gesture on a computer...

I have exactly the same problem with a Mac Book Pro 2016 with touch bar. I only have it for 3 days and the trackpad three finger drag only works on the right side of the trackpad. If I place my three fingers at the center or left side it does not work. At the same time, if I use my external Magic Trackpad 2 it works fine with three fingers. I do not think it is software issue because it would be present also with the external track pad.

I made a video that I can share... I called apple support and sent them the file report. If this is not addressed within a couple of days, I will return it and get my money back ($3500)...

So after a good amount of experimentation, it definitely seems to be a palm rejection issue. Palm rejection is erroneously capturing the three finger gesture.

The only way I can reliably use three finger drag is by giving the Trackpad what it wants: a palm. I'm right-handed, so I take my left hand and rest the palm on the trackpad a bit. It can even be just the top corner. Once I do this, three-finger drag works as expected, without issues.

I'm curious if anyone else can reproduce this "fix" to see if this works for others.

yep this seems to be the issue. If your 3 fingers are perfectly horizontal to the trackpad it will work 100% of the time. If the 3 finger is in any way diagonal to the trackpad, it will not be recognized. Bummer. Half of the time I'm working on a couch or in a weird position which naturally forces the alignment of my gesture to not be perfect. Thanks for your comment!! Definitely put me on the right direction to solve this!

I know most of you will disagree with me, but it's of my professional opinion, that ultimately this is at the very least a major design flaw. At best an annoyance. The use of dual tracking sensors and the oversized pad simply were not tested enough. Or poorly unrealistically implemented. With that said, I'm wondering if using third party software like better touch tool would be of any help. Well at least maybe mitigate the design flaw. Sorry to hear about all the trouble.

It's definitely caused by the palm rejection.

If your fingers "look like a palm" when you start dragging, the problem will occur.

  • Make a 45-degree clockwise angle and start on the left side.
  • Make a 45-degree counter-clockwise angle and start on the right side.

To workaround the problem you can:

  • Start dragging on the right side with your right hand.
  • Start dragging on the left side with your left hand.
  • Make your fingers perfectly horizontal.
  • Touch the trackpad with your other palm first.

Yes, this is really annoying. The three-finger drag enables me to work efficiently when working with spread sheets, navigating in GIS software and in dragging and dropping multiple items to and from multiple windows (of course, one can use cut and paste but still). What I like about this gesture is that you can switch between scrolling and dragging (with utmost accuracy) effortlessly by just gliding your fingers. Pressing and dragging is a gesture that is done more efficiently using a mouse.
