Yes, the device passcode might be 4 digits, or 6 digits, or can be an alphanumeric phrase. It is usually different from the password for your Apple ID.

Presumably you set it when you configured the device. If you cannot recall it then you'll probably have to wipe the device and restore from backup.

Are you being prompted to create one rather than enter one already set up? See Get started with iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch - Apple Support. If it is a new device is there any data on it already that you would miss or can you erase it with iTunes and start over?

No, It's just a regular update for latest version of iOS.10.1.1
Did you do an over the air update on the device or use iTunes? There are two different builds of 10.1.1, the most recent one only available through iTunes.
