Itunes keeps changing my playlists?

Whenever i create a new playlist on my iphone while on the go, and then later connect my phone to itunes, itunes will add the playlist to my computer, but will take out seemingly random songs from it. For example, I made a playlist today with 85 songs in it, when I connected to itunes, the playlist was left with only 14 songs. (It was an entirely new playlist and all the songs were also downloaded to my phone.). How can I make it so when i connect my iphone to itunes, the playlists i crated/updated won't be wiped, and my itunes will be updated with the new additions

iPhone 5s, iOS 9.3.3, N/A

And if he (she) had replied that the issue was not fixed, then a further step in the process of fixing the problem would have been suggested.

I guess I have to just accept that itunes is garbage and use another service as I've done everything I've read on any forum and it still happens.

Well, feel free but you won't find another "service" that manages your iPhone. That's why iTunes is there.

Ah! Now we are getting to the problem.

Read the next two paragraphs first, so you get an understanding of the cause of the problem. Then read the "Detail" section, but take your time with it because it is long and detailed. Read it carefully, more than once so that you can understand what to do, what not to do and why.

If you move a song from one folder to another (using your computer's file manager), after you have told iTunes where the song is located, then of course iTunes will get confused. iTunes is simply a database; it is a list of your music, the music is not "in" iTunes, so if you move a song using your file manager, you will cause problems.

The only organisation you should be doing is inside iTunes: renaming songs (to correct ms-typed titling etc), adding artwork, modifying Playlists, changing genre even. It all should be done in iTunes. Do not change filenames after adding songs to iTunes.

------------------ ------------------- --------------------

Detail:

When you add the music to your computer, you should be putting it into the correct folder first, then telling iTunes that it's there:

  • If adding from a CD, iTunes will put the files in the folder it wants. Leave the files there. (See below for the point I make about compilation albums.)
  • If buying from the iTunes Store, the iTunes download should put the files in the correct folder. Once again, leave them where they are.
  • If buying digital music from other sources (Amazon, Beatport, Bandcamp etc.), if the files automatically get placed into a folder, it's probably best to leave them where they are. Amazon for example create a folder in your Music folder. But if you manually download the files, place them into the appropriate folder before adding them to your iTunes Library (because, as I've stated already, what you are doing is not "adding them to your iTunes Library", but instead you are "telling iTunes where the files are located". There's a big difference.
    • I leave (or place) my purchased music into folders for each supplier, because I think it will make it easier if I need to locate files by source if I need to re-download them.
    • Basically, the usual location for music (on Windows machines) is similar to:
      • for iTunes and CD music by a single artist: Music\iTunes\iTunes Music\<Artist name>\<album title>\<song title>
      • for iTunes and CD music compilation albums (by various artists): Music\iTunes\iTunes Music\Compilations\<album title>\<song title>
      • for Amazon purchases: Music\Amazon MP3\<Artist name>\<album title>\<song title>

About "compilation" albums:

If you copy a CD into your iTunes Library, it may be placed into the wrong folder. To avoid this, before importing the album, look at the CD Info panel and make sure of the following:

User uploaded file

If the album has different artists for each song, that the compilation box is ticked on:

User uploaded file

If the album is placed in the wrong folder, it doesn't really matter, so again, lave it where it is. I can provide further detail if you wish.

Lost artwork:

are the files that lose their artwork when re-importing them wav files?

That answer was so not helpful.

How do I get Itunes to STOP deleting or reverting my playlists on my iphone every time I connect to Itunes?

I have wasted so many hours rebuilding my playlists.

I'm using Itunes 12.1.3.6 for Vista 64 bit. I don't sync my music. Ever. It's all 'manually manage'.

What happens is sometimes when I add or remove music using itunes it gets hung up on 'preparing to update' every time that I happens I know I'm screwed: it removes tons of artwork from my phone and then spends 10 minutes re adding it. Every THAT happens my playlists all revert to the version on itunes on my computer. Is there any way to stop this from happening? (I have no sync or unsync playlists button)

To you perhaps, but since the person who set the question did not respond to the information given, we don't actually know that for sure.

If you have your iTunes set to Manually Manage your phone, then iTunes should not be trying to do anything with the Playlists on your phone. Are you sure you have it set to Manually Manage?

Yes I'm positive I have itunes set to Manually Manage. Sync music is unchecked. It should not be touching my playlists but it is. I guess I have to just accept that itunes is garbage and use another service as I've done everything I've read on any forum and it still happens.

Hey thanks for the detailed answer! I'll keep it all in mind and watch my file organization. It must be that I'm moving those folders around because this last time it happened I kind of expected it because I had moved it - meaning I'm starting to notice that's when it happens if that makes sense.

My frustration with it is that it SHOULDN'T screw with my playlists if it gets confused. It should do what it used to do: give me a pop up saying 'The song _______ could not be used because the original file could not be found. Would you like to locate it?'. Then I'd have the option of redirecting iTunes to the new location.

As for if the files with missing artwork are wav files or not I am not certain but probably now that you mention it.

Again thanks for the info!

It is - definitely.

It's confused, that's the nature of confusion.

My advice is put the original files in the correct location (or the location you prefer) before adding them to your iTunes Library.

HI CKB Strat0s,

I understand that when you sync your iPhone with iTunes, it removes some of the songs in your playlists on your iPhone. I know it's important to have your music updated across all devices, so I'm happy to help.

To start, reboot your iPhone and your PC:

Restart your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch - Apple Support

Do you have Apple Music set up on your iPhone? If so, make sure that it's also configured on your PC:

iTunes for Windows: Play or download unlimited songs with Apple Music

Thanks for using the Apple Support Communities. Cheers!
