Do all IOS apps have access to your phone number by default?

Hi. I've been searching the net for hours and I just can't find an answer to this...

I know that IOS apps can request permissions, such as having access to your contacts. But what about your own personal phone number? Can all apps see that by default? I've never seen a request for that, unless it's part of allowing them access to your contacts?

I would just prefer not to share my phone number with any of the apps I use, so I'm hoping that's possible.

Thanks all for your help 🙂

I don't need a technical engineer answer lol... Funniest reply yet! It's a pretty simple question really. Surprised it's been this awkward to get an answer to be honest. I'm not a developer. I'm just new to ios and want to know a simple answer to a simple question. I don't want apps taking my phone number without my permission and want to know if they're able to do that, that's all.

Let's recap... you have asked a question about user level security and privacy policies of perhaps the most secretive technology company in existence, and you're puzzled about not getting a "clear" answer.

With all due respect, you have been given that simple an answer, and you have waived us all off.

...that still leaves me very unclear on the situation

...but that doesn't really answer the question

...I have a feeling no one is going to be able to answer the question here

My quote from the developer site, while not a chapter and verse answer, clearly shows the mindset and approach Apple has about user privacy. That they do not publish the entire playbook is part of the security and secrecy, don'cha think?

Apple also does not publish how many botched attempts on your password will lock your account up. We all just trust it's a number of some sort and that it keeps our accounts secure. Communicating that number may give the black hats an edge.

Want more control? Choose another technology partner.

As I suggested before, if you are still apprehensive, you may what to consider Blackberry, who hung their hat on data security too.

And maybe just test. Install the app you're curious about and see if "it" knows your phone number.

You're simply going to have to rely on faith then. If you don't accept that Apple works on your behalf to keep your data private, then I suggest you don't use iOS.

iOS Developers work in a much more stringent environment than an Android developer.

This is from the developer's website.

Thanks for the reply, but that still leaves me very unclear on the situation. A lot of apps can claim they need your info, but it doesn't mean they actually do. And I don't see any way for users to know which ones can actually see their number.

I'm not interested in which apps "should" be able to see your number, I'm just interested in knowing if any of them can without the user's permission. Thanks.

I appreciate you're trying to help, but that doesn't really answer the question. I have already read through the privacy policy etc. I haven't seen anything written about the user's phone number. It's unclear from the wording I've seen which is why I've asked here.

Does anyone actually know the answer to the question? Thanks.

Yeh that's how it seems to me too. I just can't find a way of telling if any of them can see my phone number or not. I have a feeling no one is going to be able to answer the question here if there's no one that can talk directly to/from Apple. I'll give it more of a chance to see if anyone has an answer, otherwise I might try contacting Apple directly instead..

You don't just want an answer, you want an engineer level, "I wrote that code myself" response. That is not likely to happen here.

Any member of this community with the definitive answer you are expecting is probably bound 10 different ways to not share it here.

I'll guess there are Apple employees here who respect the NDA'ness of their jobs.

You clearly have a use case in mind.
