Suggestion regarding the Spam iCal adverts masquerading as invites

I have started receiving these, as so many folk worldwide have. I have used the workaround and managed to delete the invites without notifying the perpetrator.

My suggestion, since Apple Support can be hard to get hold of, is to use Twitter to @applesupport to express the concern over the problem. https://twitter.com/AppleSupport is their twitter account.

I apologise if this post is out of scope. The problem is becoming so widespread there is a danger of its flooding these forums in iCloud and iCal threads.

Apple Support has responded on Twitter and is opening a case.

Found this tip in a NY Times article about the problem.

To make the spam invitations go to your iCloud mail — where they can be filtered or deleted more easily — instead of going right to your calendar, log onto your iCloud account on the web. Open the Calendar app, click the gear-shaped Settings icon in the lower-left corner and choose Preferences. In the Preferences box, click the Advanced tab, and under Invitations, click the button to have all calendar invitations go to your email account instead of your calendar. Click the Save button before you leave the screen.

To take the unsolicited invites/events off of your iCal:

1) Create a New Calendar under File menu

2) assign the unwanted invites to the new `untitled' calendar

3) Delete the `new' Calendar "Without Notifying"- but this will not block the unwanted invites/events.

To have them sent to e-mail instead:

1) Got to <iCal.com> and log in

2) go to Preferences

3) change to e-mail invites instead of iCal invites

Then junk those e-mail messages when you receive them.

The fix for Apple should be relatively simple - allow users a choice to delete invites/events without notifying the sender.

I just spoke with support. Her solution was to go to iCloud.com on Safari. Click on Calendar, then click on preferences in the lower left corner, go to "advanced" and under "invitations","receive event invitations" - click "Email to (your email address). This will unblock the button "in-app notifications". Any invites will be sent to your email account instead of your calendar.

If you use invitations on your calendar, this will not work as you will not be getting any invitations.

They are sending these invitations to your email accounts as an invitation and therefore they are going to your calendar.
