I Am replacing my 3 red generation Apple TV with the newest on. As of now I have my old Apple TV connected to my plasma with hdmi and running optical audio to receiver. I know the new Apple TV does not have an optical audio plug. My plasma does have an optical out. If I just unplug the optical,cable from old Apple TV and run it to my plasma will I get sound. If not Any other way to do this. Only have 2 hdmi inputs on reciever.
Is the Optical Connection on your TV an Input or Output? As long as it is an Output then it should deliver sound to your receiver, you could test that now.
Check your TV manual as well to see if HDMI receives audio to the TV, if yes, then you will be fine if the above works.
IT is an out put. I tried it but no sound. I ended up hooking my old Apple TV back up and running the audio through that. It works sound comes out stereo speakers and sub woofer. Only issue is it shuts tv speakers off which sometimes I like on. Acts like a center channel. Don't know why does that.
Try changing the audio settings, HDMI can carry 7.1, optical can't.
ON the stereo. I don't think this onkyo has 7.1. Too old. havent touched the settings for so long on receiver don't want to mess them up
I mean try changing the audio from the Apple TV. Settings > Audio & Video > Surround Sound.
I Think I figured out what's happening. The new Apple is connected to tv via hdmi. I used the old Apple TV for the optical hookup to stereo. in the menu of new Apple TV it let's you chose an external speaker which is my old Apple TV. if I want to hear through stereo need to chose my old Apple TV for sound. If want through tv speakers need to chose new Apple TV.
