Black screen on startup after Sierra update

My iMac automatically updated OSX Sierra the night before last. Everything was fine yesterday morning, I turned the machine off and went to work. When I got home, I turned the iMac on and it booted to a black screen, which it continues to do. Notifications and the screen saver work.

I've tried resetting SMC and PRAM with no success. Can't start up in Safe Mode, either. Any suggestions? Thought I'd reach out here before calling Support - my AppleCare has expired...

Thanks!

If Notifications are appearing and the screen saver appears, then it implies something is running in the foreground, and it's not responding to any input. Perhaps you can simply quit that app using ⌘ Q? Or, try Force Quit? Force an app to close on your Mac - Apple Support.

Can't start up in Safe Mode, either.

Does Safe Mode result in the same behavior i.e. just a black screen?

Is the cursor visible?

Did you try Recovery Mode?

John,

⌘ Q didn't work (more on this in a minute). I was able to start up in Recovery Mode, did Disk First Aid, everything checked out fine. When I restarted the computer, I saw the Apple logo and status bar; when the status bar got about halfway through the screen blacked out for a moment, then returned, but the status bar didn't move from that halfway point; then the screen went black. The cursor was visible and responded to my mouse, notifications were active and I could activate my screensaver from the upper left corner.

I decided to try restarting in Safe Mode. I was able to get partway in this time, but some interesting things happened on the screen: the screen went blue, with several horizontal blue lines moving in a wave from the bottom of the screen to the top; then the login area appeared. When I entered my password and pressed enter, the horizontal blue lines appeared again, then the screen went black. Again, cursor worked, notifications active, screensaver worked. I tried ⌘ Q and the screen flashed between light gray and black.

So that's where I am. After doing some reading today, I think my Avira antivirus/malware program may be the culprit; how can I get to it to uninstall?

Many thanks!

I should have added that I contacted Apple (via their website). They said they would ring back within 2 minutes - and they did! I talked through the steps I had already taken to resolve the issue and we agreed that I should attempt a restore from Time Machine.

If that didn't work (it did) then I would erase the disk (via Disk Utility) and reinstall MacOS Sierra.

The outstanding question remains, however: is there an issue with Sierra 10.12.2? For the time being I shall stick to 10.12.1.

Others have the same problem: After upgrade to 10.12.2 macbook pro has black screen

After a hard reboot and reappearance of the black screen, a few have made it to the desktop by merely typing their password--supposedly the install corrupted the login prefs in some way.

I restored the disk from a Time Machine backup. 10.12.1 worked perfectly again. I repaired the disk, flushed the caches with Cocktail, and reset power and login prefs to defaults. I then installed 10.12.2 again using the combo updater. All has been well since.
