Let me begin by saying that I'm extremely dismayed and horrified at the quality of updates to the Mac OSX Apple releases nowadays. As soon as I updated to Sierra major pain started in the back of my neck and it hasn't left since. Now it's been months. I sincerely hope the ghost of Steve Jobs comes back to kick some major @ss! He would be very displeased at the state of affairs.
There are north of major 32 bugs I discovered and that's just me. Things just stopped working. Really Apple? This is called an "upgrade" in you book?
After updating to 10.12.2 hoping some of the annoying issues would be resolved with the OS I was also faced with the screen of black death. I have 2 displays plugged into my Macbook Pro Retina (mid-2015) via thunderbolt plugs and an external keyboard via USB.
After much experimentation and employing the good ol' process of elimination—and yes resetting the SMC and PRAM and booting up with safe mode—I discovered that on my end it was a USB issue. (It may be something else on your side.) As soon as I unplugged the USB cable which runs into a 4-way USB hub and restarted, I got the Apple logo and a normal startup.
Not sure if this will help you but go through the same process if you have things plugged into your laptop.
