Upgrading to El Capitan

I'm using Lion OS on a mid 2010 model. I'm trying to update my software to El Capitan, but it won't let me and it won't tell me what the problem is. I have plenty of space and meet the system requirements. When I hit software update, the machine tells me that there are no updates. Any ideas?

MacBook Pro, Mac OS X (10.7.5)

If you've not downloaded El Capitan before, it is now too late - it has not been available since Sierra was introduced. Since your model qualifies for Sierra, that is what you can now download (EC is still available for models which do not meet Sierra's requirements, but that isn't the case here):
