I'm using Lion OS on a mid 2010 model. I'm trying to update my software to El Capitan, but it won't let me and it won't tell me what the problem is. I have plenty of space and meet the system requirements. When I hit software update, the machine tells me that there are no updates. Any ideas?

If you've not downloaded El Capitan before, it is now too late - it has not been available since Sierra was introduced. Since your model qualifies for Sierra, that is what you can now download (EC is still available for models which do not meet Sierra's requirements, but that isn't the case here):

It is not to late to install...just in the console set your mac to the date to sometime Dec 2015 and the start the installation...

And, did you test this yourself (which OS version to which OS)
Yes I have tested with successful result at least 2 times rolling back from Sierra to El Capitan...

Also check to make sure there is a compatible driver for your printer.
Do a backup before installing, preferable 2 backups on 2 different drives.
Go to a computer running 10.6 or one that can't up upgraded to Sierra and download El Capitan there using your Apple ID. You can also try asking at the Apple Store to see if they will give you a copy.
