My Time Machine is periodically but pretty constantly giving me the message that verification has failed and a new backup needs to be created. It has been an irregular but constant issue, happening 3 or 4 times in the past 12 months.
Could it be a failing hard drive? Or another issue with the Airport?

My TC is less than a year old. For me it seemed to occur after the firmware update, though it may not be related. I am using macOS Sierra and a new MB Pro 15".
That link has been archived by Apple. I wonder if they've noticed the problem...

I'm connected over wireless directly to the AirPort time capsule. No extenders. It might the wifi connection...
I have a network extension too, our old Time Capsule (1st gen I believe), in another room. It doesn't sound like the source of the problem, though.
Just adding another voice to the same issue as described by many above. Thanks all for input so far.
If your backup area is on a skuzzy, and you take that out if your computer, the default will not ask for a backup.

Apple has known about this issue for over 6 years. It's not likely that it will be fixed.
Since backing up manually I haven't had this problem anymore. It's been about 2 month since I started doing it so far no problems
Same problem here. Late 2013 iMac connected via ethernet cable to time capsule. Probably happened 6 times in about last 6 - 12 months. Just happened 2 times in three days.
Was it happening before you updated to Sierra?
Never happened before Sierra. However I can't be sure if it happened before time machine update.
Just found this on a google search because I am getting the same message. I've had my TC for several years and this is the first time I've experienced this.
