Do I have a virus or is my computer just old?

Hi all,

(Sorry if this is in the wrong thread- couldn't find a good one so just picked this)

I was doing research for a paper and visiting Google and clicked on what I thought was an O.K website but when it loaded it was super sketchy so I immediately clicked off (i.e. inappropriate material/pictures). After that, my computer has been very slow and when I booted up my Macbook Pro today, the screen was white with pixels. I just clicked and moved the mouse around and it went away. Now it's just slow, especially when I have only a few tabs on Safari running. My mac is from 2012, so I'm not sure if it's just old or if it's a virus. I have Avira and it didn't detect anything. Just wanted to get someone's opinion if they think it's a virus or not.

Also I'm running OS X 10.9.5. Haven't had the time to update lately.

Thanks!

Ok, here you go. Thanks for help!

The Motorola I believe is from my old phone that I no longer use. Not sure what that corrupt configuration file is.

You are correct that there is nothing to suggest a virus. RAM memory is limited. You know best whether the various missing or non-functioning Motorola files are still necessary.

Removing the antivirus application is, as Bob says, a good and necessary place to start but it's not as easy as it sounds. A hasty look at http://www.avira.com/en/support didn't find instructions about removal. Maybe it's there or maybe someone else here can help.

The corrupt configuration file sounds like trouble but I could easily be wrong. Running First Aid in Disk Utility would be interesting or performing a Safe Startup

OS X Mavericks: Start up in safe mode

If you don't already have a good backup method that may be your first priority. The slowdown that you are seeing could an early warning (despite EtreCheck's judgement of excellent performance) of hard drive failure.

Thank you so much for the reply! I uninstalled Avira and did a safe start up and ran EtreCheck again to get the same result. I found that a few other Apple users had the same thing, and they were told to disregard it as Etrecheck might detect it as corrupt when it isn't.Corrupt /etc/hosts configuration file

This could be the case while another thread talked about how it may be actually corrupt.

I didn't run the First Aid test yet because I wasn't sure if it would delete anything off my computer and I needed to back some more recent stuff up.

Thank you again for all your help. If you think there is anything else I can do or if I should disregard the file, please let me know! I'm thinking about possibly just wiping my laptop back to factory settings to see if that would be easier than trying to go in and mess around.
