Do I have a virus or is my computer just old?

Hi all,

(Sorry if this is in the wrong thread- couldn't find a good one so just picked this)

I was doing research for a paper and visiting Google and clicked on what I thought was an O.K website but when it loaded it was super sketchy so I immediately clicked off (i.e. inappropriate material/pictures). After that, my computer has been very slow and when I booted up my Macbook Pro today, the screen was white with pixels. I just clicked and moved the mouse around and it went away. Now it's just slow, especially when I have only a few tabs on Safari running. My mac is from 2012, so I'm not sure if it's just old or if it's a virus. I have Avira and it didn't detect anything. Just wanted to get someone's opinion if they think it's a virus or not.

Also I'm running OS X 10.9.5. Haven't had the time to update lately.

Thanks!
