Mac Sierra says "installed" but version 10.9.5 showing

I am trying to upgrade MacBook Air (2013). When I go to the App store to download Mac Sierra, the download button is not available, as it reads 'Installed'. However, when I go to 'About This Mac' it shows I am running version 10.9.5. I have restarted my laptop a few times. I am trying to upgrade to run other apps that require a more current version of iOS. Any help you can provide is greatly appreciated!

Listen... I have been at this computer all day and night. Starting at 10:30a on 1/16/2018. If you see the downloaded or installed on Sierra in the App Store WITH A GRAY TAB YOU CAN NOT CLICK. It is because you have DOWNLOADED AND INSTALLED.

OPEN APPLICATION. CLICK ON LAUNCH PAD. YOUR INSTALL SCREEN OF SIERRA WILL POP UP AFTER.

I SPENT HOURS WITH TECH SUPPORT TO FIGURE OUT THIS PROBLEM AND THEY HAD NO CLUE EITHER. WE RESET USING COMMAND SHIFT AND OPTION, REBOOTS.

I GOOGLED FURTHER AND MY RESULTS WERE RIGHT HERE. I AM A PERSON OF CONSISTENCY SO I WASN'T GIVING UP AND GLAD I DIDN'T. HOPE THIS HELPS OTHERS!

(1)GO TO FINDER. (2)OPEN APPLICATION. (3)LOOK FOR THE INSTALL FOLDER FOR MAC OS SIERRA OR THE NAME OF THE UPDATE YOU ARE LOOKING TO INSTALL. IF YOU CANNOT FIND THE FOLDER. FOLLOW THE STEPS 1-2 OPEN THE LAUNCH PAD. YOUR INSTALL SHOULD POP UP. CLICK YOUR DRIVE MAC HDD OR WHATEVER YOU ARE USING. CLICK INSTALL WAIT MAYBE 2 HRS YOUR LAPTOP OR DESKTOP WILL UPDATE.

GOOD LUCK AND I HOPE THIS IS DETAILED ENOUGH FOR EVERYONE!

I have a similar problem, but upgrading a MacBook Pro (2013?) from 10.8.5.

I ran the installer, computer restarted, but it restarted only in few seconds and under the old 10.8.5 system: "About this Mac" shows 10.8.5. and no apparent change.

If I turn on the Apple Store > Updates > Sierra, click learn more, the blue or grey bar usually used to start download says "installed".

The 'Install macOS Sierra' installer is still in the apps. Mentioning just in case it is useful.

No external disk is connected.

I repeated the install twice and re-started the computer.

Any recommendation please ?

Thanks !

I don't need any help, I came here trying to help others. (I am running High Sierra, by the way, and have had no problem with installing any version, all the way from Jaguar in 2002 :-))

I understand you are trying to help as well, but posting repeatedly (your last post appears three times) and in all caps does not enhance the perception of your message.

If you do not need any help why would you post in the first place to ask me a question? I'm here to help those who needs help. Do not post to me if you are not here for those purposes. Also one post was to you, another post was to someone else who asked a question and needed my help. Last, the final post was for everyones knowledge. Again you are welcome Luis and have a great night, as I will not argue with another man or respond to further post from you.

Thanks
