been putting off updating ipad. Just updated to 10.1.1
When i try to connect to itunes on my mac I get a message that says "itunes cannot connect to ipad"
Tried different cords, different ports, rebooted both mac and ipad to no avail.
any help would be appreciated.

iOS 10 requires iTunes version 12.5.1 at least to communicate with.
iTunes 12.5 requires Mac OSx 10.9.5 Mavericks or later to run.
If your computer is still running Mac OSx 10.6.x Snow Leopard you will need to update it if it can support it.
You will have to update to 10.11 El Capitan first, and then to 10.12 Sierra if you want to.

Thanks - can I go back to the original operating system on the Ipad?
No. Once updated, there is no way to go back.
Checked serial on Mac - shows it to be early 2008. I suppose this means it will not upgrade to El Capitan. Do you know why it will not support this upgrade?

Depends on the Mac. There are some 2008 Macs that can update to el Capitan:

Are you referring to the El Capitan upgrade? Or the iOS upgrade?
Check that your computer is compatible with Mountain Lion/Mavericks/Yosemite/El Capitan.
To check the model number hold down the option/alt key, go to the Apple menu and select System Information.
iMac (Mid 2007 or newer) model number 7,1 or higher
MacBook (Late 2008 Aluminum, or Early 2009 or newer) model number 5,1 or higher
MacBook Pro (Mid/Late 2007 or newer) model number 3,1 or higher

Also check to make sure there is a compatible driver for your printer.
Do a backup before installing, preferable 2 backups on 2 different drives.

Sorry, but what is the difference? Isn't El Capitan the iOS upgrade?
No.
El Capitan is the operating system for your computer.
iOS 10 is the operating system your iPad runs.
The question is whether you were asking why your computer cannot update to el Capitan, or why your computer with it's current OS cannot support the iPad with its iOS 10 update. 2 different updates.
Got it - I was asking why the Mac would not support the update to El Capitan. The iPad has been updated to iOS 10.1.1

Earlier you stated a need to upgrade to El Capitan and then Sierra if you want to. Are there down sides to Sierra? Also, are there upgrade steps to El Capitan such as Mountain Lion, Mavericks, etc. or can the update to El Capitan work directly from Snow Leopard?

Certain Macs may not be able to support El Capitan. Reasons being insufficient resources such as Processor Speed or Ram.
A 2008 Mac cannot update to Sierra so that point is moot.
If your computer is one that can update to el Capitan, you can get it from the Mac App Store:
You can upgrade directly from 10.6 to 10.11. Please check the model number per my last post to see if you can upgrade.
