iPhone 7 backlight bleed

Hey guys,

So I have a brand new iPhone 7 128GB, Matte Black.

No issues otherwise with the phone and has an undoubtedly gorgeous display!

However just a few minutes ago I noticed some white backlight bleed on the boot screen with the white Apple logo when my iPhone was starting up at the bottom bezel on the left right next to the home screen. Can be described as a hot spot.

Then I tried looking at blacks in other applications and a complete black screen, and sure enough I see it in all screens with black.

It is not visible any where else in the phone. I don't see it on my keyboard, settings or absolutely any where else.

Now my question is, I know this isn't how it should be. But how widespread and how normal is it? Is minor display bleed a common problem with displays? And is it understandable for the iPhone 7 display to have this bleed?

Thanks for your comments.

Just to update this situation. I did get a replacement. The service centre acknowledged that backlight bleeding in my phone was in fact higher than others. But they also acknowledged that it is something that it is present in other pieces as well, the only variation is the degree.

I myself having checked a few devices both at the service centre and the Apple Store, it is primarily prevalent from the bezel end of the home button. And I saw a lot of models where the bleeding originated right on top of the home button onto the screen. It's as if light is leaking from under the screen from the home button.

Again, only visible on blacks, and when the brightness is turned up a few notches.

If I had to put a guess as to why this is happening, I'd say it has something to do with the quality of the seal between the display and fascia.

On such a beautiful display, the only refinement required... hope apple can do something about this.

Did you already have the chance to compare it to other iPhone 7 models?

In any case, visiting an Apple Store or an Apple Authorized Service Provider and showing them the problem will get you the fastest result. Your device is still under warranty, so getting it serviced should be not problem.

Start a service request

Find an Apple Authorized Service Provider

Make an Apple Store appointment

Hey thanks for your response.

So I went to my Apple Store, the one I purchased it from and compared it with other iPhones. Sure enough, the other iPhones also had similar issues, particularly close to the home button. AgainC very hard to spot, and only visible on a black screen with brightness turned up to 100%. In fact the store was shocked as well. But said that a replacement would do little good if all phones have similar issues.

Any way I spoke to the service centre as well (Apple Authorised Service Centre) and they said that some bleeding is common. But I felt that my screen was bleeding a little too much, so I asked him what my options were.

He said he would repair it and there were no chances of a replacement as component repairs are now available. So the screen would be replaced but not the phone.

Now my iPhone is brand new, literally under 3 weeks old. This problem probably existed out of the box, it's a shame I didn't notice this before. Am I the only one though who feels that a brand new phone shouldn't need to go under repair for a manufacturing defect? Especially for something that is quite common? How reasonable would it be to ask for a completely new device?

I've used iPhones for quite a while and with the iPhone 5 I had a string of replacements for errors that were no fault of mine, two out of those were the display problems, like burns, and non responsiveness (without any physical damage whatsoever).

Am I the only one who thinks Apple should seriously revisit their display quality control? I've been an Apple customer and an Apple FANatic for almost all my life, and it's so disappointing that the portables for very thing they cost are just not turning out to be durable these days!

My iMac after 7 years is still bright as a pearl, but the iPhone state of things is really troubling.

If I'm lucky, I really hope that someone from Apple reads this, and seriously does something about the quality control. Apple has always been a grade above every thing else, and it should not fall!

Really frustrated on hearing that my brand new iPhone 7 might have to undergo repair, when it might not even completely fix the issue. I'd be happy to wait for a new batch of perfect iPhones if there's a problem with a certain batch of supply.
