Preview freezes when trying to merge PDF files

When I try to add PDF pages to another PDF Document in Preview, Preview freezes and I have to do a Command Q to get out of Preview. Always worked great previous to macOS Sierra. Does this on both my iMac15,1 running macOS 10.12.1 and my MacBook Pro12,1 also running macOS 10.12.1.

Does not seem to matter where or how either PDF was created, it hangs on all types.

Any ideas?

I just opened a PDF with Preview on macOS Sierra 10.12.1. Then, I enabled thumbnails, and selected the first thumbnail. I then proceeded to insert several PDF and image files using the Edit menu : Insert : Page from File... menu item. I could insert selected content directly after any thumbnail selection. When done, I pressed the option key and File menu : Save As... and wrote out the new PDF.

You cannot insert after Word or Pages documents as Preview has no means to save these, and therefore, will not permit you to append to them from the Insert sub-menu.

I'm having the same issue with being able to insert PDFs from Preview using the "insert from file" option and I purchased this computer two weeks ago.

I open the first document in preview, look at the thumbnails so I can select the page I want to insert documents after, go to Edit > Insert > Page from file > select file I want > open and Preview just freezes. The only way to exit is Force Quit and when I reopen the document will have only saved the first page of the multipage PDF I was trying to add.

It's worked fine on my other, older computer but adding PDFs on the new one is troublesome. Do you have any advice on what I should do because I looked at the earlier solution provided and I'm not inclined to go through all those steps for a process that I can do on my old computer but not my new one.

The problem is that some PDF's cannot be combined. The freeze of preview happens before the file is actually added and therefore the saving of the file doesn't come into play.

I have done more checking of when this problem occurs and when it doesn't and have yet to come up with a set of circumstances that are consistent but will keep checking. Some PDF files downloaded from the internet can be combined and some cannot. Some PDF files made by scanning on my Epson WF7520 can be combined with others and some cannot.

I have started to get in the habit of opening PDF's in my PDF Expert app and using it as it always works. I just wish that preview worked as well as it used to. Apple, please fix this!
