Icons on desktop & in folders for Word & Excel documents

I think Sierra has changed the icons for Word and Excel files. “Test 1 Word” and “Test 2 Excel” are files I created and saved to the desktop. The icons are not colored, blue for Word and green for Excel. Further, at the bottom of the icons in small print are the characters “DOCX” for Word, and XLSX for Excel.

However, when I create an alias, my preferred icon in blue and green appear. Moreover, when these files are in a folder, the small icons differentiate the files by showing up in blue and green.

How do I change the “Test 1 Word” and “Test 2 Excel” icons to appear in the format shown by “Test 1 Word alias” and “Test 2 Excel alias”?

You can try this: Control-click or Right-click on your desktop, select Show view options, Uncheck 'Show icon preview'.
