Black screen after Sierra update (today)

A report from a problem solved in order to understand what could be the wrong and be useful to others.

Today (14/12/2016) after a Sierra update, my Mac Pro (2010) just presented a black screen. The cursor was active and the I saw the dock (less than second) when the cursor was at the left top corner of the screen.

I tried several types of reboot and memory reset without success.

The problem was solved only by reboot with Command+R and a fresh Sierra installation.

It was a 3 hours nightmare.

Anyone with the same problem after the 10.12.2 update?

What could be wrong?

A bug?

A known version 10.12.2 problem?

An error during installation?

I hope this is solved permanently.

Thank you.

I tried to re install Seirra 10.2.2 twice. Each time same problem. I was patient both times, pressed space bars etc. After two hours nothing. So I use Command+R at re boot and selected restore from Time Machine. Thank goodness that Apple at least have got that right. Easy steps to follow and after 6 hours system is restored to 10.2.1 and all but one file are recovered.

Big question for me is do I every do an update again? 10.2.2 clearly is not fully tested on every configuration machine. Shame on you Apple, that's why I left MS PC's after 20 corporate years of crashes and irrecoverable failures. So how will I know when to update..10.2.3 perhaps but my confidence is rattled.

Why can't Apple state what the problems might be and come clean about this update?

I had the same problem today. All day long trying and failing...

But this last try worked:

I entered Recovery Mode and restored to the previous version of Sierra from my Time Machine external drive (fortunately I had it updated and perfectly working).

It took very long but my MBP seems to be running ok for now.

I have a MacBook Pro 2013. I tried resetting NRAM, SMC, disk repair, safe boot and so on.

I googled and found this: http://www.macworld.co.uk/news/mac/how-do-i-restore-my-mac-time-machine-3449071/

I hope it works for you.

Now I'm afraid of installing that Sierra update again or even rebooting my MBP... :-(

By the way, now Time Machine is stuck on "preparing...". :-P

Is this happening to anybody else? Is this a problem with that last Sierra update? Is my MBP too "old" for that update? Any comments? Any advice?

I went back to the previous Sierra version from my Time Machine. It took me hours (who's gonna pay me for my time?) but at least my MPB is running ok for now. Anyway, I think Apple should fix this stupid problem as soon as possible and send a new update. Why customers would have to guess they should write their passwords on a black screen? Apple, you gotta be kidding!

Hi,

I had the same issue when I tried to update my late 2014 5K iMac. This was the very first time I'd ever come across an issue with an Apple update so was wraxing my brain as to what had caused this. I booted the iMac up in repair mode and reinstalled from the most recent backup from TM. Took less than 40min and was back in business. Then I had a lightbulb moment! I'd installed Bitdefender anti-virus recently and this was first update of any sort that I had been attempted since. Uninstalled Bitdefender completely using the software's uninstaller and then tried the 10.12.2 update again. Went as smooth as you like and all is fine now.
