Black screen after Sierra update (today)

A report from a problem solved in order to understand what could be the wrong and be useful to others.

Today (14/12/2016) after a Sierra update, my Mac Pro (2010) just presented a black screen. The cursor was active and the I saw the dock (less than second) when the cursor was at the left top corner of the screen.

I tried several types of reboot and memory reset without success.

The problem was solved only by reboot with Command+R and a fresh Sierra installation.

It was a 3 hours nightmare.

Anyone with the same problem after the 10.12.2 update?

What could be wrong?

A bug?

A known version 10.12.2 problem?

An error during installation?

I hope this is solved permanently.

Interesting - 10.12.3 is not showing as an available update for me, yet there it is in the app store. I'll be interested to see any replies to this, too.

Initially on 10.12.1 no problems with AirBook. After upgrade to 10.12.2 I encountered the black screen problem. After upgrading to 10.12.3 no further problems.

Did you wind back to 10.12.1 then upgrade to 10.12.3 or did you do one of the two main fixes mentioned above then upgrade to 10.12.3

This solution worked for me thank you!

I tried zapping the PRAM prior to this and it didn't work. Entering the password once the screen goes black worked like magic!

I have the same black screen except that there is not even a cursor. It's totally black!

typing the pw and hitting return did nothing to change my black screen. screen went black after installing sierra on my iMac. Now what should I do?
