Black screen after Sierra update (today)

I have been without my screen in the last six days, only been able to get into the guests screen. I tried this simple solution before giving up for the day, to my surprise it worked, maybe you should be working for Apple.

OK folks just happened to my wife's computer googled this

1. Boot to single user mode (hold ⌘S while powering on the Mac)
2. Type and hit return:

   /sbin/fsck -fy

3. Type and hit return:

   /sbin/mount -uw /

4. Type and hit return:

   rm /Library/Preferences/com.apple.loginwindow.plist

5. Type and hit return:

   rm /Library/Preferences/loginwindow.plist

6. Type and hit return:

   rm /private/var/db/.AppleUpgrade

7. Type and hit return:

   reboot

This worked no need to reinstall the first step (step 2) took 5-8 minutes and found error which then were magically fixed. Step 5 said no such file as did step 6 but when I rebooted all was well

OH my god, so many thanks it did work for me, I thought I would have to wait for the next update to be able to use my laptop again, thanks you again so much!

Maybe mine is a different issue, but all I have to do when the 10.12.2 black screen appears after start-up is type in my machine password. That's all. Everything is good after that. It has happened twice since I updated the OS one week ago. Annoying problem, simple solution.

We visited the Apple store for the second time. Hauling the monitor and the Mac Pro. When David our Genius connected it. Everything worked like a charm! Brought it all home connected everything one by one. Now it works! Still don't know why. Same monitors. Same everything.

Try a fresh install to a newly formatted drive.

Your fix worked for me. Was planning a 35 minute one-way trip to the Apple Store. Decided to search for solutions on my iPad and saw this. Awesome! Thanks

Since I was having recurring problems I went ahead with the upgrade this morning (1/24/17). So far everything working well!
