DiskImageMounter error message opening image files on Time Capsule

After upgrading to 10.12.2 I get the following error message when I try to open image files with a double-click on my Time Capsules: "The application "DiskImageMounter" can't be opened. -36"

The error does not occur when I open local images only with images on the Time Capsules. Same error with .dmg, .sparseimage or .sparsebundle files.

I found a work-around solution to this bug.

I just got a new 2015 15" MacBook Pro (avoiding the 2016 USB-C models), running macOS 10.12.2. I have the same problem as the rest of you: In Finder, I can't open any .sparseimage or .dmg disk image that lives on the built-in disk of my 2TB 2011 Time Capsule (Airport Utility says 7.6.7), which is mounted as the AFP network disk "Data". I get the error message "The application ‘DiskImageMounter’ can’t be opened. –36". Mounting Time Capsule images works fine from my old Macs running macOS 10.11 -- a 2010 MacBook Air and a 2009 MacBook Pro with an aftermarket SSD that just died (making me get the new Mac).

So I tried opening Disk Utility and creating a new .dmg disk image, test.dmg, on the Time Capsule network disk, with "File" > "New Image" > "Blank Image...". It worked! And when it was done, the new image was mounted! I ejected it, and tried mounting it again by double-clicking the .dmg file I had just created. Now I got the same error message as for the other disk images.

So I went to the Disk Utility menu again, and mounted it SUCCESSFULLY using "File" > "Open Disk Image..." That's the solution! (Until Apple fixes the bug.) It successfully mounts .dmg and .sparsebundle images that live on the Time Capsule network disk.

Sam Thank you

I would like to add some of my experience. My terminology and lingo are not that good. I had prevous problems with my TC and every now and than I check the backups via Time Machine app or by clicking the sparce bundle from Finder. Scince the last update I cant open the sparse bundle from Finder. I followed Sam advices

to see the content of TC backup sparse bundle:

I go to Disk Utility;

Right clik on Time Machine Backups and chose Show in Finder.

Now the sparse bundle opens and I can see each of the backups.

I would like add some more stuff. So far , in my case, time capsule wasn't always visible under Disk Utility ( I cannot say when it shows and when not). I had many talks with Apple Support. Some guys said that TC is NOT supposed to be seen in Disk Utility !!!

After this update 10.12.2 I can see TC every time I start the MAC and run Disk Utility.

After Sierra update I had to manually connect TC from Finder every time I needed its disk. Again some Apple employes told me that it is a new security feature: all network disk should be manually connected by the administrator. Interestingly others didn't know about this.

After 10.12.2 TC is connected all the time and there is no need to connect it manually from Finder.

I have the same issue. I was on the phone with Apple support for almost two hours last night. I finally spoke with a guy named Logan C. after getting moved up the chain a few times and he has identified it as an "emerging issue". This is definitely a major bug in 10.12.2 and I hope that Apple will resolve it in the next macOS update.

I want to throw my time capsule out the window. I've spent so much time on this! I've got a 2016 MBP Touchbar/Retina iMac 5K and I keep getting this stupid error-36. I've wiped my capsule, spent so much time ugh. I didn't even think of that update, it worked fine before that. I also corrupted one of my backups trying to fix it so many times. Could you elaborate, do you put a new image on the sparse bundle or time machine backup?

FWIW, although you may have been able to open files directly from a Time Capsule in the past that was never its purpose. It is part of a backup system.

You can still do that if you want by mounting the sparse bundle with Disk Utility and navigate into the backup folders to the file you want. Again, not its purpose. It's like saying I used to be able to rear end other motorists but because of automatic braking now I can't.
