DiskImageMounter error message opening image files on Time Capsule

After upgrading to 10.12.2 I get the following error message when I try to open image files with a double-click on my Time Capsules: "The application "DiskImageMounter" can't be opened. -36"

The error does not occur when I open local images only with images on the Time Capsules. Same error with .dmg, .sparseimage or .sparsebundle files.

That's great and all. I'll tell you what needed to happen in a scenario like this Why has it been like this for YEARS?I've had each generation device basically and it's always been like that. They should have alerted users of this CHANGE. I spent days trying to fix this garbage. I've never posted in one of these forums ever. The genius support didn't mention this etc. Also, make a better error then -36 that means nothing to us. IE- this version doesn't support this or something like that. I recently wiped my 5k retina as well as bought the new touchbar MacBook, of which I wanted to dump both. I was looking to use files from my NAS device.

So did apple just decide in a .2 update this is how it is? I also ruined a back up some how trying to get them to open. Do we know this is Apple's stance moving forward? I want clarification on how this device should operate in steady state mode.

Also, how come you can't open saved word documents in the folder? It will open .pdf/jpeg of the few I've tried. This isn't only in relation to .dmg files. I can't open any go pro videos either. Does that mean I need to drag and drop to the appropriate "desktop" to open? That doesn't seem all that "needed". I repeat, I don't rant like this but this one really pushed me.

First, I thought your story of "FWIW" this it isn't a bug, that's how it's supposed to operate? Doesn't appear your sticking with that story anymore. I googled the heck out of this before I resorted to wiping, not one article on "-36 error". No one is perfect, that's a understood statement. However this is potentially a major flaw that is really going to drive some people insane. People pay a lot of money with an understood expectation. This doesn't meet that expectation.

That's not what I said. I said Time Capsules were intended to be used for backups. The fact that one could open files from them may or may not have been intentional or unintentional. I have no idea since I don't know anyone from Apple and they most likely wouldn't tell me anyway. As far as it being a major flaw. I've had a Time Capsule for a number of years now backing up 3 Macs. Not once has it occurred to me to open files from the Time Capsule or the other drives I use with my other Macs. I've had no need to. Backups for me are just that. Something I can restore from if I need to. This 10.12.2 issue has no affect on restoring files through Time Machine.

Find a work around.

Actually I do have the same issue on my iMac 5k. After I installed 10.12.2, any mp4 files on my TC started to pop-up a error as "xxxx can't open" and i can't open it with double click.

The work around is , mount TC via smb. Then everything will come back normally.(Waiting for the permanent treatment from Apple)

🙂

Thanks for this, I'm not super familiar with all that. Can you explain that a little further? Am I connecting via smb etc? Also, should I be able to connect with back to Mac from any wifi? I'm having issues when I'm remote (at my office) and trying to connect to time capsule or my retina at home from my MacBook. I do have a dual stacked IP address I believe. Maybe you might know this as well. Thanks!

Using Disk Utility to mount images stored on a Drobo connected to my Airport Extreme, I'm now getting a kernel panic, forced reboot every time Time Machine tries to do a backup... 8-0

The newly released firmware 7.7.8 for Time Capsule seems to have solved some of the problems.

After applying it, pdf and jpeg files on Time Capsule connected with AFP can be opened by double click as before. Disk image files still fails to open, just showing - 36 error.

As SMB connection is slow and unstable in my home LAN, I will go with AFP and will open those disk image files from Disk Utilities' File menu until Apple solves the problem completely.
