Font Book not displaying symbol fonts

Mac Pro came November 2016 with Sierra installed. Mac Pro is unable to display any symbol fonts' character glyph in Font Book app and Emoji & Symbols app, where display of all symbol fonts show same boxed question mark symbol replacing all symbol font character glyphs.

Emoji & Symbols app is only effected after install of Microsoft Word, indicating that a 3rd party app can worsen the system corruption displayed in Font Book. Font Book corruption is present from the moment the macOS is turned on, when run for first time after unpacking Mac Pro purchased from Apple Store.

I had the same problem, and people have been reporting it since Yosemite, although it didn't happen to me until I upgraded to Sierra.

Problem with some symbol fonts after Sierra install

People have had mixed results resolving the issue. Most people, and articles I read suggested you follow the steps below:

1. Verifying fonts in Font Book

2. Resolving duplicates in Font Book

3. Using the 'Restore Standard Fonts' option in Font Book

4. Deleting the Fonts plist file in the preferences folder

5. Removed the font cache and database

They didn't work for me, but the latest Macos update (10.12.2) fixed it.

Greville
