New IOS 10.2 TV app breaks Home Sharing for Home Videos

Hi,

Executive Summary:

The news IOS 10.2 TV.APP which replaces Videos App can’t access the iTunes Home Videos library on iPhones 5S, iPhone 6S plus, and iPad retina. It’s either excruciatingly slow on my iPad and iphone (almost 2 minutes for the Home Videos window to show up; or it doesn’t work at all in other cases. Read on for details. Please let me know if you have this problem too.

Detailed report:

I have over 2700 videos that are a combination of Lectures, Projects, Entertainment and home videos. These are shared via “Home Sharing” using iTunes (ver. 12.5.4.42) directly from my macbook pro. All files are sanctioned MP4 videos that worked perfectly 48 hours ago that we accumulated over the years. This is how I’ve used my MacBook for years and it’s always worked perfectly until before the 10.2 upgrade. I used to watch them either on my Apple TV via the “Computers” Icon, or on my ipad/iphone via the Videos app. As I said it all worked perfectly until yesterday before TV.app and IOS 10.2.

After I upgraded to IOS 10.2. It removed the Videos App on my iPhone and iPad and replaced it with TV.app. TV.app is great on my Apple TV 64, but aweful on my iPad and iPhones. My 2700+ home videos, lectures, and video projects just became unusable as of yesterday unless I’m sitting in front of my Apple TV in the living room. I can still access them on my Apple TV via the computers icon; Thank you for not removing that functionality, but my iphones and iPads became a lot less useful since yesterday.

The devices I’m having problems with are all my current devices:

-iPad Retina 4th Gen. Model MD513LL/A. IOS 10.2

-iPhone 5S. Model NE297LL/A. IOS 10.2

-iPhone 6S plus unlocked 64 gig model.

-Everything is done locally via WIFI on my intranet.

-Router didn’t change from yesterday. It’s still my apple airport extreme.

First the iPhone 6S plus:

It Doesn't work at all. My mother used to be able to access the Home Videos by entering my Apple ID that we use for home sharing. It’s different from her apple id. Entering my Apple ID into her Home Sharing setup of TV.APP in settings does absolutely nothing. None of the home videos are available at all. She sees nothing. No shared library. No Home videos tab. Nothing.

iPad retina:

It’s already setup with my Apple ID. Clicking on TV.APP opens TV.APP. Clicking on the “Library” menu on the top left hand side opens a menu after a couple of seconds:

I get:

-Recently Added

-TV Shows

-UserName’s Library

I Choose UserName’s Library and A FULL 30 Seconds Later and then all I get is:

-Recently added

-Tv Shows

-Home Videos

-Someone’s iPad

I choose Home Videos and a FULL 83 seconds (That’s one minute and 23 seconds later):

- At the top I get a grey tab that says “Showing only content on UserName’s Library”

I get a window with the home videos.

Everything lags and is slow. If I click on an item there is a noticeable lag. Sometimes I have to tap on an item several times. When the Lecture video starts playing it’s laggy and jittery at times. It wasn't like this yesterday before the update. Everything was smooth.

So lets recap. It now takes 113 seconds or about 2 minutes to look at a list of my home vidoes. It's the case every time I tested several times to see if it will improve with caching. This process took less than 10 seconds yesterday before the update. So now it’s low 1000% slower, less efficient, less optimized. Did apple do any functional tests at all? Any limits testing? Black box testing? How big was the shared library if you tested at all? Anyone who’s had apple products for a long period of time would have more than a few token videos, right? How could this be allowed to pass QA? Who was in charge?

Iphone 5S:

It’s already setup with my Apple ID. Clicking on TV.APP opens a window with two choices:

-TV Shows

-UserName’s Library

I immediately choose UserName’s Library and 28 seconds later I get:

- At the top I get a grey tab that says “Showing only content on UserName’s Library”

-TV Shows:

-Home Videos:

I immediately click on Home Videos and 33 seconds later I get a list of Home Videos.

-Clicking on an item is more responsive than the iPad retina; but, slow than on the legacy Videos app.

So lets recap. It now takes 62 seconds to do something that used to take about 5 to 6 seconds. Again, this is about a 1000% slower. I am not sure what’s going on. This is a huge let down. Please fix this. As an interim fix maybe re-release the “Videos” app that you removed? Videos was not perfect. For example it had no search function for home videos (By the way neither does the new app) but I didn’t have to wait up to two minutes to start looking for a video! How could this pass QA?

Please fix this. I get the new TV.APP. I used it yesterday. It’s nice on my apple tv; but, I really need the functionality of being able to see my Home Videos on my iPad and iphones. It’s not just for entertainment. I also use it for my classes. I need this to work. A1000% worse performance is not something that I can reasonably overlook. I’m aghast that this was clearly not tested but it was pushed via a live update with no warning. Someone clearly doesn't understand the concept of QA and functional testing.

Happy Holidays.

I have similar issue. Home shared libraries failed to show on the Library screen until I went to Store and down loaded an iTunes video. Downloading a free 2 minute trailer was enough to correct the issue. I then deleted the trailer. I don't buy stuff from iTunes store so this was a first for me.

Sadly it seems like Apple is slowly phasing out the home sharing option on iPad and iPhone, and since they don't give third parties access to this API there is no way to build a work around.

I ran into the problem of syncing videos from iTunes to iPad as well which is why I build this app to fix the problem: View in iTunes

Maybe it solves some of the problems you experienced.

I have the same issue as all where it take forever, if ever, to load ripped movies (dvd/blu) and worked perfectly in previous Video app.

can anyone provide a link to complain to apple about this defect.

know they do not really look here and would like to email them daily ( would love to do it hourly) every time I try to watch my movies on the new Tv app... not.

Thanks lederermc -- this works! I didn't see a downloadable movie trailer, but I downloaded a TV trailer. At first I downloaded it on my MacBook Pro, and should have known that would not help. But then I downloaded it on my iPad -- and wah-la -- upon launching the TV app, and selecting Library, the much missed Library drop-down menu at upper left now appears! Scroll down to the bottom of the menu, and there's my shared videos! It's great to be sharing again -- thanks again lederermc!

Thanks, I did confirm that already. The thing I've noticed is that it comes across as hit or miss. Or sometimes it just takes a long time to figure everything out. I can keep changing menus and then at some point, everything will just show up. But then no rhyme or reason as to when, how and why it just goes back to only my purchased content. Looking forward to experimenting with 10.3 to see if anything gets fixed.

I am with you on this KM. Second time Apple has decided to make Hone Sharing vanish on iPads, iPhones and iPods. First it was music now it is your own TV library. Then they remove binge watching of your own library... Lame!

Found a great work around that removes Apples idiotic ideas of what we want... It is called Plex, down load the App, download the media server add your media locations and watch it.

Down side to this approach, Plex wants $4.99 per mobile device to activate the ability to watch on your mobile devices.

Up side to this approach, $4.99 is a one time, per device, fee and you shed Apples hold over you.

Another upside, You can also stream your media library anywhere! Home, shopping, airplane... just make sure you set the media server up to allow it! Plex is available on Sony and Microsoft as well so if you decide to boot your Apple product at home, you have options!

So Apple can keep messing with us, but the power they have is fleeting at best. Steve Jobs would be appalled at what Apple is trying to do now.

Shame Apple!

Still Broken.

I have the latest12 inch iPad pro now. With my new iPad I can see the list of movies. However, when I click on one it crashes after a few minutes and actually crashes iTunes on sierra and subsequently nothing works sharing wise.

It works perfectly on my very old iPad with the old videos app.

The problem is QA, and the bloated code on the TV app.

Apple "Should just work." That's why we pay the premium price. This has gone on for too long 😟

Same here. Very, VERY slow interface. A couple of other serious bugs and missing features:

• No genre sort, at all I have over 480 series with over 5,800 episodes in them (yes, I'm a pack rat). That's a **** of a long list to scroll through. (Even dumber than iTunes insistence that each entry can only have one genre; you know, because there's no such thing as a movie or TV show that's both a comedy and a mystery, for example.)

• No watched/unwatched indicator or sort for shows, just a grayed out check mark at the deepest level of the list. Seriously, really?!?

• Well, no way to sort your library list al all!

• No way to fast scroll to a certain letter in your list (the letters are missing from the right side). Want to watch an episode of "Zoo?" Get ready for a LOT of finger scrubbing!

• In the initial view, everything is "Recently Added Purchases," whether it was purchased from iTunes or added to the library via another route.

• "Watch Now" and "Search" completely ignores your iTunes library in favor of streaming content ONLY.

I'm sorry, but this app feels more like an early proof of concept alpha, than a finished product. Sad. (For lack of a better term) Luckily, the AppleTV still has its "Computers" app (I've reprogrammed my remote back to the old buttons and moved this piece of junk off screen to the bottom of the list!). Of course, it doesn't no squat about genre ether.

Very similar issues.

iPad 3 will eventually allow me to get Home Sharing content on my Mac Mini. But it is much slower to get there, and sometimes I'll have to force quit the TV app and reopen it once or twice to get it to finally connect to the content. This iPad uses the same iTunes/iCloud account that my home sharing is set up on.

My son has a iPad Mini 2 that will not connect using our Home Sharing account. He has his own iTunes/iCloud account with family sharing set up with the same iCloud/iTunes account as our Homes Sharing. With home Sharing enabled in the TV app settings, he is unable to access that content. He can access the shared music with the same Home Sharing account info, so the issue seems to be limited to the TV app.

Pretty disappointed with this update. The iOS TV app is currently pretty useless, as trying to find a show on Hulu is also slow, and rather clunky as it switches from the TV app to the Hulu app to watch the show. I would imagine that support for other streaming service will grow and it may become more useful, but it will need to view the content within the app, or at least streamline how it interacts with the other streaming apps.

Bring back the Video until the TV app is ready.
