iPhone 5s Battery life is very poor after update to ios 10

After updating to iOS 10 from 9 the battery will only last about half of a day. A 100% charge used to last a full day easily. I am not using it anymore than I did before the update. I tried the recommended battery saving measures. Even in low power mode the battery depletes quickly. I updated last night from 10.1 to 10.2 and it did not help. Any ideas?

Good day Kappy,

I have the exact problem with my 5S. I tried all mentioned, even reset the phone and ran it for a few days without a restore, but still the same. I even booked it at a Service Centre (Genius Bar) and they tested the battery and said it was healthy. I get an average of 3-5 hours on standby even on Airplane mode and all services turned off. The usage time when not connected is 1-2 hours max. Since the update to 10, I have never been woken up by the phone alarm as it dies in the middle of the night.

I read on some post that the iOS 10 is not compatible with some processors on some of the phones (I believe all with Samsung processors) hence only affecting some of the phones. Any truth to this or has anyone been able to find a solution as I know I am not alone on this.

Any assistance in this will be greatly appreciated as currently I cannot afford to buy a new phone. Thank you.

iPhone5 which was replaced by local iPhone 'genius after original's battery had swelled and lifted screen exactly one year ago. Battery life was excellent on ios9; showing 50% plus after three days normal usage and I had been resisting ios10 (if it ain't broke...) after seeing others' battery issues. It was finally force-flashed and now shows <15% after one day normal usage. This was 10.2 and since 10.3 was already released, (and it's now broken) I selected that update. Now it's showing 79% after :40 minutes use and <3 hours standby. I had already tweaked everything unnecessary off on ios10.2 with no change in poor battery life. Wish there was a way back to ios9...

Update on my post above from three days ago:

IOS 10.3.1 Took care of my battery 'drain' issue. (I did the [step 2 above] reset which along with 'app' updates should always follow firmware updates.) Now showing 65% after two full days of normal usage which is close to what I experienced running IOS 9.

Only suffered IOS 10.2 for less than a week and other than tripled battery consumption, had noticed no other operational changes.

Not so with IOS 10.3; it's the greatest operational improvement since IOS 5!

Appearance and colors of all screens noticeably improved, some (like alarm set and snooze) radically changed and all 'look' better.

Most immediate operational change is no 'swipe' to open, just a double touch on 'Home' button for 'Lock' screen (or open if unlocked), along with plenty more improvements...

Many new features that my iPhone 5 (non-S) has no hardware for (like 'fingerprint, apple-pay etc. ...). And I expect after six months to be finished with 'updates' as IOS 11 is released. (IiAB/DFx) 🙂

I had 'donated' my perfect iPhone 4 to escape Verizon and 'got-lucky' with this '5'. There had been a few defective batteries in their first few months (2011), not enough for recall but enough for Apple to have a phone replacement program. So after more than three years, noticed a sliver of light at screen edge which was from the swelling battery lifting the screen. ➕Had expected just a battery replacement and they gave me a brand new phone last year...😎

Art 😍

Have you tried any troubleshooting?

  1. Restart: Press On/Off button until the Slide to Power Off slider appears, select Slide to Power Off and, after It shuts down, press the On/Off button until the Apple logo appears.
  2. Reset: Press the Home and On/Off buttons at the same time and hold them until the Apple logo appears (about 10-15 seconds).
  3. Restore: Connect your iPhone to iTunes on your computer, backup, and then select Restore to Factory.
