btw, a great free app to take you directly to com.apple.Safari.SafeBrowsing is easyfind (select 'files and folders' and 'show hidden items').
Good call on EasyFind! Been using it for a few years now and love that little app. Beats the snot out of the Finder for simple file searching.
I've tried a lot of the remedies suggested here, but so far the only one that's helped is deleting the SafeBrowsing resource in /private/var. In the Terminal, I did this:
james$ cd /private/var/folders
james$ sudo find . -name '*Safari.SafeBrowsing*'
./by/tbdlqx1j5y73jjr0ryy3n01r0000gn/C/com.apple.Safari.SafeBrowsing
james$ sudo rm -rf by
I immediately restarted and that crash dialog hasn't popped up again in several hours.
Out of curiosity: how do you start this Terminal? i read it before in this thread but i have no idea how you start that in apple.
Go into Apps>Utilities>Terminal
I purchased Adware Doctor from the app store getting a 5 star rating, anyway I ran it and restarted my mac so far so good no popup been about 4hours.
The crash hasn't occurred for me since last night. The deletion of those 3 files in the private folders has seemed to have done the trick. Thanks everyone 🙂
Tried the terminal commands to remove the three files that quite a few suggested, but, did not manage to get to the right place although I followed everything carefully. Also tried quite a few other suggestions that did not go to any resolution, however, they did not work so tried your:
1. Closed all safari windows
2. Cleared History
3. Cleared all cookies (safari/preferences/privacy/manage website data/remove all)
4. Closed safari and restarted my Mac
This seemed to do the trick, but, whether it was that or if Apple sorted it out I'll never know. So, thanks if it was. I've installed 10.12.2 now and I do not believe that was ever anything to do with it. The great thing about forums on a busy subject is the amount of false trails and beliefs that get followed by people, especially people who seem to know a lot, but, often provide false trails all the same as, we do not know yet what the cause actually was. People were being very helpful, however, it was amazing how often over a period of time how different approaches turned out not to be the answer or, appeared to be, but, may not have been. Interesting event. 🙂
I have this App for Mac (Disk Diet-great price) from Tunably Software (https://www.tunabellysoftware.com/)
I opened Disk Diet, let it finish checking everything, and then CHECKED ONLY THE "CACHES"
CHECKBOX and put it on "Diet".
Seems to have stopped that problem-using Safari this morning and all okay
I have been following this thread since I have had the exact same crashes occurring every few seconds. At some point overnight the crashes stopped and have not returned. I DID NOTHING except wait for a solution.
SUCKY WORKAROUND! At least on my systems.
On my systems every time I use "Spotlight Search" I get the same dialog box error. So, I tested if the offending action checks for the existence of the "a" dialog box and sure enough it does, at least on my system.
So this works for me:
Keep the dialog box open and hide in the lower corner behind Dock:
The problem originally started for me after the last OS X update. Since I've been using this crappy workaround I no longer get constant interruptions.
Apple, just because I'm willing to "temporarily ignore" the popup (and maybe others) doesn't mean you should. Now I'm just waiting for a definitive fix.
Cheers!
Try this:
1. Close all safari windows then just open Safari Browser.
2. Go to History on top bar and Clear History (bottom of drop down menu).
3. Clear all cookies (safari/preferences/privacy/manage website data/remove all).
4. Close safari and restart Mac.
Apple doesn’t routinely monitor the discussions. These are mostly user to user discussions.
Send Apple feedback. They won't answer, but at least will know there is a problem or a suggestion for change. If enough people send feedback, it may get the problem/suggested change solved sooner.
I think that a lot of people have contacted Apple via feedback and Apple may have resolved the issue themselves, however, without any statement from Apple how is anyone to know? Support forums exist because Apple do not let anyone know what is going on or, what has changed etc. It's free labour and there are a lot of helpful people on here at times, but, Apple could let its customers know what is occurring.
Thanks Martin: Appreciate the suggestions but I really don't want to lose my history and cookies. I'm a cloud developer and it takes too much time to recreate the certificates, cookies, two-way auth, trusted device, etc... for all the different environments. Time Machine is not a solution as I've already tried it... renaming files:
All the other suggestions and solutions are good but I'm a trust but verify kinda guy.
Additionally, I've searched for a solution and reviewed possible solutions. However, all the solutions recommended... involve something I'm unwilling to try or do at this time.
Plus this is not an isolated case and Apple should offer a response and solution/patch.
And I do sincerely appreciate the response! I'm holding your suggestions as a last resort.
Cheers!
