iOS 10.2 TV app offline issues

So sync'd 12 movies and 50 TV shows for a flight. Get onboard and the Movies all work in offline mode fine - though the offline mode is clunky - seems to wait to check for a connection even though wifi is off and airplane mode is on

TV shows showed the titles (this was in downloaded upper left category) - going one level deeper to specific episodes in each title resulted in a busy indicator on the TV app and then a blank list. Had this happen for ALL TV shows - again movies were fine.

Connected to inflight WiFi and viola - list is updated. Go back offline and then it all works as it should.

HIGHLY suggest checking to see if your content works offline before leaving your itunes sync location if not using cloud download for content.

How did this pass QA? I know the TV app replaces Videos but for offline use it's a buggy mess - would prefer an option to go back to the Videos app. Now rolling this out to 5 year old on her iPad is going to be painful - keeping her device on an older iOS build till this is fixed.

I have read the workarounds, they worked temporarily but a few hours later the same issues returned and portability is now gone again. But the real point here is not that the workarounds are not sustained, the real problem is that Apple should never have created this problem in the first place, this is not a "glitch" the code in the software had to be purposely written to do what it does. A demand for connectivity, does not come about by accident. Apple will, I predict suffer backlash from this and rightly so. I for one will not be using iTunes in the future, simply because as of this latest action on their part, it is no longer reliable.

Glad I'm not alone on this gaff.

I just did a round-trip flight to Chicago, from the west coast and was not happy to find this new TV App won't let you watch your rentals offline; you must be connected to the internet to see your movie collection. Are you kidding me? I even transferred the rental movies to my iPad mini before flying, so there wouldn't be an issue.

It gets better ...the passenger next to me on the flight wanted to watch his movies too, on his iPad Pro - sorry, no go for him either. How in the world does Apple not beta test these apps and not catch this? It's a rhetorical question - needs no answer.

I want my rental fees back!

Just found another issue with the "TV" app. Looking at the menu, it has no option to pull down the full library. Under the "movies" system that preceded the "TV" app the full listing of all TV shows was available. Now that option is gone, and as a result NONE of my Home videos that used to be listed under "TV Series" are available. I tried using the "Library" link, I wasted 30 minutes waiting on it to download my library, and it never pulled in anything, other than those downloaded to the device are present. No streaming of home videos allowed on this "TV" app, apparently.

I have found several movies and TV series I would like to have, but I'll wait for the DVDs unless Apple fixes this problem. I won't be buying any more iTunes offerings if I cannot be sure I can watch them.

This is how i fixed the TV app issue after much headache! Made a appointment with the local Apple Store and the first person to help me failed to make things better by doing a backup restore! this locked my ipad out of the itunes account and made the TV app none loadable from the Itunes app! clicking on the install link stopped working and i could not down load my music! the apple guy then left after creating the mess saying it was HIS break time! scary right! After complaining and waiting thirty minutes to speak with a manager and never seeing the first guy again! he made my Ipad worse, than it was when i took it to the store! A second guy was allowed to help me after showing the manager the issues the first helper had created! This guy showed me how to delete the back up! and install software fresh as install like new. After this i down loaded my apps and the issue was cleared! The apps either has link issues or software issues and this is the only way to repair it! Note my appointment was at the Friendly Greensboro NC apple Store and at 2:30 pm. If apple cares to do something about this breach of customer service by a representative! I did have and still have a screen shot of the TV app window showing my ipad needed to be online to view my purchases! I will also have a second screen shot of the app allowing my to view my downloaded purchases when its working properly! I was shocked that the apple representative I spoke with almost acted like it was normal for the TV App to lock you out of being able to view downloaded purchases on a IPAD. This is the second time a customer care representative has stated its supposed to lock out customers from being able to use the purchased Itunes content offline. Apple really should do some more training or disclose the new policy if true to its customers!

Almost seems as if Apple is trying to turn people away from using iTunes. Well, if that is the case I have good news for them, I won't be buying anything from iTunes in the future. If Apple is going to make iTunes this unreliable, there are other options that work much better, then put forward such a half hearted effort to fix the problem. Then there is no need to continue using their service. They could have simply issued another iOS update reverting everyone back to the previous system until they worked the bugs out of this one. But, hey, why bother when you can use your paying customers as beta testers? RIGHT?

I would hope apple will train employees to notice this issue. The statement should work like this. "Yes Apple is aware of the issue. I will make a appointment at your nearest apple store for a full restore. You should delete any and all back ups saved in Icloud as well as inform the Apple employee you need a full restore from new state and then re-down load your apps to the device. At the same time please change your apple login password after a fresh in stall. Please re login your apps to be sure full service is restored to your device and apple is very sorry for the inconvenience this may cause and the time it will take. rest-assured that apple is very well aware of the issue and working to correct the problem."

Or apple could be honest and state hackers exist and software is compromised constantly and Apple software was hacked or affected on the firm ware level and this is why such a message appears in the TV App. honesty is not a normal concern it would seem.

The only work around without going to the apple to store for a full restore, from NEW! is to leave the TV App open while on wifi in whatever show you have downloaded! Do not swip up ever! just leave it open when offline you should be able to double click and see the open window. The only TRUE fix is to make a apple store appointment for the device take a pick of the TV App not working offline. You know that little box showing you must be connected to internet for the TV App to work properly. Something Apple clearly coded into the new update. It would seem they have chosen to do this as a test to see how many people complain about it. Notice it. All those with Children who allow them to watch Ipads or Iphones of Itunes purchases while in cars or on planes are just out of luck! Even while the Amazon App clearly allows you NOT only to down load your purchases to a IPAD or Iphone BUT watch them offline as well! I do hope enough people speak up and make it clear this is a APPLE mistake!

I am with you. My first computer was an Apple 2e. Then I went to the first Mac. I have not used Microsoft ever, except at work where i had no choice many years ago. Today we have three Mac Pros and four iPads in the family. All of us have had it. Spent thousands also on iTunes. Today it is Saturday and I am ready to go out and buy a new tablet, not Apple.

I am having the same issue. Even after a complete restore, I get the dreaded white screen when trying to view movies in offline mode. It is unacceptable that Apple has not fixed this issue or has done this intentionally. I use the free open source VLC app instead of the TV app. It works well and since it is open source, bugs are likely to get fixed rather quickly.

TThe old video app worked well but the new tv app is a disaster for offline viewing. I found a work around. Before I travel i download the movies while connected to the internet and then go to settings and put the iPad in airplane mode immediately. That seems to lock the movies onto the tv app for viewing offline. There has to be a better way but that seemed to work.
