Can I make this in FCPX?

Before you kill me completely new to FCPX. We are wanting to make sure we can create something similar to this on FCPX before we buy it. We are wanting to make in game tutorials for our clients much like this video here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1WJjSoG3kLo&t=93s at the :28 mark. We like the dark overlays and the rings/arrows etc for editing. Is this possible to do?

Also, purely for effects can you outline a freeze frame in FCPX so that the line gradually goes around the object. Say we have a video of a staff member kicking a ball. If we freeze frame it and then try to outline around the leg of the person so that the line moves is that possible?

Thank you all again for your help.

Not really. FCPX is a video editor, not an effects system. You can do most of those effects using Motion but Motion is an effects system, not a video editor. Drawing masks around individual characters and putting masked circles around them is tedious. You can create presets that will make the job easier but that's very advanced Motion work.

That soccer game thingy used a screen capture device that allows zooming and moving, I think, and probably has all of those isolation and highlighting effects built in. I don't known nothin' 'bout no gaming videos so just guessin'. Much easier to do with dedicated hardware than software. There must be some gaming developers and game sales trade organizations where you can find out what hardware and software products these folks use.

Wsit, are you not doing gaming promos? You're doing sports analysis?

Yes, it's all possible but you want to expore the devices that the big dogs use on network football games. Try searching for Telestrator, that was one fo the first drawing devices used on live American football broadcasts back in the 1970s. I think it's still a thing.

That's a no-brainer 😉 … if you done it before, like me …

Asks for for some additional help from a painting.app, here in use Pixelmator (29$).

Your example shows the effects are applied to non-moving parts of the clip, which makes it really easy, cooking recipe following:

Step #1:

Add freeze/export freeze

User uploaded file

set playhead, shift-H, share, done.

open resulting png in Pixelmator...

Step #2

select player, PM has a 'magic marker', doing that in seconds

User uploaded file

when player is selected, apply effects on separate layers, example here 'Stroke/outline', or…

User uploaded file

… or Inverse selection/lower brightness, or add a dotted line, an arrow, wotever...

Step #3

Export as Photoshop document/psd, drag into your FCPX Project.

Notice the tiny Compound Icon upper left! That means …

User uploaded file

… that a double-click opens that 'clip', and each layer on its own lane.

Now, movie magic begins:

Step #4

Switch layers/lanes on/off, keyboard shortcut V, or fade it in/out:

User uploaded file

darken…

User uploaded file

outline…

User uploaded file

combined darkened/outlines/dotted line ...

really easy & fast … when done frequently …

diff. story for moving images… have a look at the 'depository' of free plugins at fcp.co, where, aside many others, I publish my free stuff (lots of football 😉)

There you go: three wildly different opinions and a recipe that involves time, patience, experience, external applications, press and filters (but they are, mostly, free).

If I have just learned how to prepare macaroni and cheese by removing the seal from a styrofoam bowl and putting it in a microwave, I may or may not be ready for soufflé or sushi rice.

hahaha, excellent, but, David, doesn't (or shouldn't) all our work demand time, patience and experience?

not to forget passion, excitement, joy - when accomplished 😉

(ok, some of my projects in review … lil' joy … LOL)

and it's really easy …
