If she can, she needs to troubleshoot fonts. Block "A's" are usually due to a corrupted or duplicate font.
Open the Font Book located in your Applications folder.
Then go to the Font Book menu bar and click Edit > Look for Enabled Duplicates
If there are no duplicates found, back to the Font Book menu bar, click File > Restore Standard Fonts
Fonts not included in the OS X system install will be placed in a "Fonts (Removed) folder next to the Fonts folder.
If she can't access the Font Book app, she may be able to troubleshoot fonts from Safe Mode. (A Safe Mode boot also deletes system caches that might help too).
To start up in safe mode:
- Start or restart your Mac, then immediately press and hold the Shift key. The white Apple logo appears on your display. If you don't see the Apple logo, learn what to do.
- Release the shift key when you see the login window. If your startup disk is encrypted with FileVault, you might be asked to log in twice: once to unlock the startup disk, and again to log in to the Finder.
Follow the instructions above for troubleshooting fonts.
To leave safe mode, restart your Mac without pressing any keys during startup.
