How long does an apple magic mouse last, and can it be repaired?

After about 2 ½ years, my apple magic mouse started losing its connection. None of the steps listed in apple support fixed the problem, and I had to go back to my old USB mouse. Is this a question of life expectancy, planned obsolescence, or what? And can the object be repaired?

iMac, OS X El Capitan (10.11.6)

There is no defined "life expectancy." As you know, nothing lasts forever. It is not, I am sure, "planned obsolence."

No, the cost would be prohibitive when compared with the price of a new one.

I would reset the SMC and NVRAM to see if that improves the performance. If that does not, replace it.
