How do I eject Time machine? I can't seem to find any place to use the eject icon when Time Machine is connected I've been waiting until it's not backing up to disconnect manually but there are better ways.

I neglected to mention, if you have "Show Time Machine in menu bar" enabled, you can select "Skip this Backup", from the drop down menu then go into Time Machine preferences and turn Time Machine off, then eject the drive.
Ditto - Time Machine performs periodic backups automatically. Disconnecting negates the purpose of Time Machine. However, you may consider connecting the external drive to a router that has a USB port. This way you can still backup to it using Time Machine without having to continuously disconnect it from your computer. I really only see this being beneficial if you're backing up a MacBook.
OK, I understand. My real problem is that the On-OFF slider switch on Time Machine preferences has been removed on Sierra and one or two earlier OS versions So--how do i Turn Time Machine Off now without interrupting backups, etc.?
It's just a checkbox "Back Up Automatically" instead of the on/off slider now. Just uncheck it, and then skip/stop any running backups.
FWIW, it defeats the purpose of Time Machine to eject a drive while it's backing up. However, just turn Time Machine off.
Honestly I don't see any benefit. One might as well do the Time Machine backups manually. Oh well, different strokes… 😎
