How to tell if you are buying a 5th or 5.5gen iPod.
I'm looking to buy a new iPod, upgrading from my trusty 3rd gen. I want to buy a 30gb model but is there anyway I can tell between the new ones and the old ones? The only store near me is known for selling outdated products so I want to be sure.
If it comes in the box, the 5.5G iPod has an image from "Pirates of the Carribean" on the front, and the 5G has an image of some guy singing against a blue background. Hope this will help.
The Fifth Generation iPod (Late 2006) serial number's last three digits will be one of the following: V9K, V9P, V9M, V9R, V9L, V9N, V9Q, V9S, WU9, WUA, WUB, WUC, and X3N.
I am really glad that someone asked this question. I have just been given my Christmas prezzie early, and I was slightly worried that it might not be the 5.5 or Sept 2006 version.
Anyway, I have a very cheeky picture of Mr Depp on the box complete with the tricorn hat, and my serial number ends in V9P!
(My main concern was the extra resolution for the movies which as doubled i believe from the first version).
Both the new late 2006 and the first ipod video 5th gen both have the same resolution. Both can play the same resolution. That is not one of the new features that was incorporated in the late 2006 and the first videos. I tunes 7 upped the resolution for them both. And for that matter for non video users and anyone that wants to view their purchased products at a higher resolution.
If I am correct I believe the only difference in the late 06 iPod's are the screens, or rather the brightness. The software update lets the video be displayed at a higher res on both and allows for the support for games on both. So, the brighter screen, and 80GBs is the only difference in the iPods.
Still, I do feel better that it is not a unit that has been sitting on the shops shelves for the past six months.
I am extremely impressed with it, and find it a lot better than my previous Photo iPod, even if it might be superseded in January by the rumoured full widescreen version that's 'supposed' to be coming out!
