AMD Graphics stalling on 3 Macs with latest El Capitan udpate

I'm having a problem on three different systems. 2 MacPro towers and a MacBook Pro. All running the latest El Capitan with the latest updates.

Since the last update, all systems are having trouble with the AMD graphics cards causing temporary hangs and generating errors in the system log.

System 1: kernel[0]: stalling for detach from AMDCypressGraphicsAccelerator

System 2: kernel[0]: stalling for detach from AMDJuniperGraphicsAccelerator

System 3: kernel[0]: stalling for detach from AMDTurksGraphicsAccelerator

When these errors are generated, the system completely pauses as if locked, then comes back until the next error.

Not sure what is causing this and a google search comes up with nothing for the "stalling for detach" message.

Appreciate any help.

Best,

Chuck

hello,

same problem here.

iMac 5k late 2015, i7, AMD R9 M395X 4GB, 32GB ram, 1TB SSD, El Capitan 10.11.6 (15G1212).

it appened 2 times since the last security update ( Security Update 2016-003 (10.11.6)), after 7 - 8 days of activity, OSX hangs for about 10 - 20 seconds (menu-bar clock stops updating).

the first time while I was working on a Win10 vm (Vmware Fusion 8.5.3), the second time while I was scrolling a page in Safari.

it has never happened before the security update.

message from console: stalling for detach from AMDTongaGraphicsAccelerator

iMac (Retina 5K, 27-inch, Late 2015), with AMD Radeon R9 M395 2048 MB, running 10.11.6. Ran Security Update 2016-003 on 12/31/16. Now when I run a batch action in Photoshop CS6, after around 320 files, computer freezes up like everyone else. When I look at Console log, all messages, when the problem occured, I see:

First line repeats about every 15 seconds until I am forced to power it off.

Just spent almost 2 hours with Applecare, which led to this thread, so this seems to be a real issue with that update.

I'm seeing this as well with my 5K iMac (late 2014) as well. In my case just normal use (browsers, whatever is affected) If I ssh into the box, interestingly the shell process doesn't free at all, so it's completely desktop related.

I'm guessing something in the kernel must be spinning after using the GPU to accelerate some operation.....

This issue is ruining my workflow because I have to reboot every other day or so, I need a solution.

So, therefore the question: Am I right is assuming that if one reinstalls 10.11.6 from scratch, the latest security updates are not included, but are offered as an update from the AppStore after the install? These updates were published after the release of 10.11.6, so they should not be included in the 10.11.6 build of El Capitan. If so, a fresh install would eliminate the issue. Thanks.

iMac (Retina 5K, 27-inch, Late 2014), El Capitan 10.11.6 with all latest patches.

I am having the same problem with the kernel stalling to detach "AMDTongaGraphicsAccelerator". I've disconnected network, ran diagnostic mode, tried to repair via disk utility and checked SMART status. (I've had these kinds of problems in the past related to the disk spinning down as well as network issues, but this one is distinctly different.)

Reboot will fix the issue and the wait time until the issue re-occurs is unpredictable. The only thing I notice is that it seem to happen when I am not using my computer, only when I have left it alone for a while. I only use my computer 8 hours a day during the week, so this could be by pure chance (75%+ probability it will happen when I am away by random chance).

I'm experiencing the same problem on a Mac mini (Mid 2011) with Core i7 and AMD Radeon HD 6630M graphics and a Cinema Display connected via Thunderbolt. I get the

kernel[0]: stalling for detach from AMDTurksGraphicsAccelerator

message in my Console. My computer is practically usable! Anyone know if upgrading to Sierra will help? I'm guessing the answer is no....
